G'day

I have a new steering wheel, a real one this time, Grant Banjo 14.75"
with 3.5" dish, leather covered. It feels really good and I think suits the car.

Graham,

Love the new steering wheel and overall project. Any thoughts of mounting a small panel beneath the dash below the steering column to hide the wire bundle? Any room inside the dash to better hide the bundle? Just a suggestion :). Love the stock tachometer. Does it work? What would it take to get it working?

Beautiful job. How much does the car weigh (in lbs please);)

Keep up the great work! Any thoughts about adding a Gen 2 turbo system in the future??

I've always thought that a 1949 Ford Anglia rotary conversion would be an awesome project. Any of those in Australia??

Cheers!

G'day

Thank you all for the kind remarks.
The car never had a tacho, the centre pod is for the Speedo and fuel gauge, both of which work.
Yes I have plans for a 3 to 4 inch strip across under the dash, roughly in line with the air con vents, that will hide a lot of the wires etc.
The car weight was 750kg or about 1650lb now I am not sure but in the region of 1000kg or 2200lb everything we have done has added weight.
There will be no turbo, it dose what I wanted and hoped it would do now, it is not a drag/race car but a cruiser hence the auto box, which it dose very well.
The standard Morris had a claimed 28kw, the standard series 5 RX7 had a claimed 120kw which is a fair increase for the old girl to cope with. I am putting it on a dyno next week to see what it actually has.

I love this wee car! It looks great in that colour and apart from the number plates and oil cooler cover you would never guess its been modified- thats the way I like it. I want to keep my Viva looking period so it looks like my dad could have converted when he was young and just handed it down.
good work.

Nice build, bet it sounds mean. Liking the colour too, suits it well :) - I'm in the process doing similar to a moggy van for my father.

Morrx 01-15-11 06:41 PM

G'day

The colour is the cars original colour, not one I would of picked but it suit it very well.:nod:
What van dose your father have and what are you doing to it?
Do you have a thread on it anywhere?
There are a couple of good forums dealing with Morris Minors, which you might find helpful, one in Australia "morrisdownunder.com" and one in the UK "morrisowners.co.uk".

G'day

When we got the gearbox, we did not see it running, we took the pan off to have a look, it was clean with no metal.
Unfortunately the second third change started playing up fairly soon ending up with a gearbox rebuild.:(
I got the car back on Thursday marvellous the difference a properly working box makes.
At the same time we found that the secondary ports were not working so my 6 port was only acting like a 4 port but still made around 85kw at the wheels. It is now much stronger in the mid to upper rev range.
The combination of gears working and increased power makes it feel much quicker with less effort:nod::nod:

Sweet car! Love the steering wheel! What did you do for engine management??

Morrx 04-05-11 01:35 AM

G'day

Back in Vic. after an enjoyable few weeks in Tasmania, I used the trip as a shake down to going to Port Macquarie (2011 Morry National ralley) as it turned out it was a good job I did.
After getting the car back a day late from getting the rebuilt gearbox installed and the secondary ports fixed, so they worked I got on the boat and proceeded to Hobart with out trouble.
From when I got the car there had been a rattle from the back sometimes on rough roads, after a trip to Molesworth ( steep narrow road) where the rattle seemed continuos I took the car to South East Car Care in Sorrel to have it looked at.
He is a bit different from most places as he knows what a Morris Minor is and is not scared off by a modified car.
He found that the clips to secure the rear disk pads in their slots had not been fitted, which let them move and rattle, he also noticed that both rear axel seals were leaking, they had not been fitted correctly as he found when replacing them.

https://i55.tinypic.com/jgqxja.jpg

While he was under the car I got him to check everything else as the engine/gearbox going back in had ended up being a rush, he found that one engine mount was broken and the engine/gearbox was not aligned properly.
Now with new clips, engine mounts and it aligned properly rattles have gone and the car feels much better.
All of the above is a bit strange as the car was in a workshop on the hoist 2 days before I went to Tas so should have been seen and fixed. The diff has only done a couple of thousand km so should not have been leaking.
Generally not happy there. :( :(

I had my best drive in the car to that time, after it was fixed, from Hobart to Port Arthur, the engine was running well, developing full power and the car felt tight. Good fun. :D :D

Morrx at Eagle Hawk Neck Tasman Peninsula Tasmania.
The second picture shows the actual Neck which in convict times had a dog line across from water to water to deter escapes from Port Auther. Mind you there was nowhere to go on the other side, Tasmania is an island and then as now is mainly wilderness.

The trip back up to Davenport to catch the boat was also great fun, 110km 2 lane road with a good surface, some overtaking lanes but also caravans, now that the secondary ports are working the engine is developing very good overtaking acceleration - 80km to 110ish very quickly.:nod::nod:
Now just about ready for Port Macquarie.

G'day

Engine management was originally with the standard computer but this became all too hard to get right (too many things not connected to it) so we piggy backed a Micro Tech unit onto it.
The new unit looks after the engine and the original talks to the auto computer.
