Which Mazda is this AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY from?
Which Mazda is this AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY from?
I found it at a local salvage yard, when I was picking up some other Rx-7 filter housings.
I notice that it is the same size, uses the same lid as the 1st gen Rx-7s.....but it has that extra "spout" with a flapper in it.
Anyone recognize which model Mazda this could be from?
More pics.....
Ok,
Well here are some more pics of it. I am a little confused. since I was looking around the web at some pictures of Rx-2 and Rx-3 engine bays, and none of them showed the charcoal style air cleaner "lid".
I do have a standard Rx-7 lid, and another one with the charcoal setup and nozzle on top for the hose......just didn't know if one went to it or not. All the pictures of old Rx-2 and Rx-3 seemed to show an older Mazda logo too.
Also, if anyone is interested in buying it......I set it up on Ebay.....

the charcoal canister is on the inside of the lid, so the only way to tell if it has one or not is to look for two hoses going into the top like this:

btw, notice my lid doesn't have any mazda logo on it at all and it [was] a bone stock 73. These photos are 3 years old, and the 80 12A is in place now, but not yet running . . . new pictures soon.

Its an RX-5 air box. The MAZDA ROTARY ENGINE wording is post 75 era.
The series-I RX-5 ran from 75-78 & for the U.S market, had the charcoal canister inside the lid.
Scary thing about the CD Cosmo/RX-5 was the fact that it was voted the 1975 Japanese car of the year.
Like the U.S.A, this car was a flop in Oz too.

yeah, the bottom half looks like 71-73 but that lid is definately later. I don't see how the charcoal canister even works without a second hose sucking the vapors back out and into the engine.
I'm not sure if the 2 even go together. I found a few air cleaner boxes at the salvage yard, and only 1, had the K&N filter, logo, and entire box and lid together. I have that one on ebay too.
So.....could the bottom be from an Rx2/Rx3,,,,,and maybe the lid from an Rx5?
Also......didnt the 79 Rx7 use the same charcoal setup?

The CD Cosmo/RX-5 is a nice car all around. The only thing lacking is power; a bit like what I've read recently about the RX-8. Apples and oranges obviously, but it makes you go hmm...
Yeah, the SA models had a carbon canister in the lid. The hose is connected indirectly to the PCV valve in the base of the manifold which also connects to the tank purge line. The carbon absorbs fuel odors when the car is not running, while garaged, for instance. Then the fumes are sucked in through the carb when the motor is started. The vacuum on the tank purge line keeps the tank in an over-rich condition which keeps it from blowing up when the sending unit inside the tanks arcs, as it will in normal operation. Scary, huh?
