manual steering

Quick question for you RX2 guys. My car has a manual steering rack, and unfortunately I don't know much about it. The problem is when I turn the wheel to the right or left, it takes about 2 or 3 inches of turn to get the car to move in that direction. Also, the wheel does not sit straight... ie when the car is going straight on its own, the whell is 3 inches to the right. So basically I need to tighten the steering. How is this accomplished... thanks!

Hmm..
I need to make my self a new bushing that goes in the top of the steering shaft for mine. Its not there anymore so the steering shaft moves around in the other shaft.

Are you sure it’s the steering box that needs tighten?
That is really weird that it would do that.

3 inches is a lot of play. It sounds like the steering box could be worn beyond any adjustment, or it could also be a worn out idler arm. Check out the idler arm and other stering gear components for looseness first.

Kick when you make your bushings, can you make me (2). I have a '73 2dr and a '74 4dr that both have play in the steering wheel. I was beginning to think it was a factory option. What is the estimated cost?

i would agree that it is a bad bushing on the idler arm... i had bushings made a long time ago but never got around to putting it in the car before i sold it.
stand outside the car with your hand on the steering wheel and look in the bay as you jiggle that wheel back and forth... see what is causing the play.
