Keep your old school rotaries!

...Unless you are selling them to me!

I can't tell you guys how much I regret selling my Rx-4. I was getting married and was sick of paying money for it's storage unit. I sold it for a big loss to a guy in TN who I doubt has done anything to it, but I hope he has...He's not on the internet so he has little hope of getting parts!

Now I'm watching the values of all the pre Rx-7 mazdas shoot up, and I knew it would happen. It's going to be a lot harder to get back into them. Maybe when I'm done putting my FD back together I can trade down to a vintage rotor.

I owned 2 RX-2's in the early '90's, I had to sell one of them due to parking issues. I regretfully sold one of them for $500 (non-running). The other, I thankfully still own and definitely am keeping.

I am keeping my fingers crossed, am traveling around right now and found this old Mad Max like place in the desert. They have an all original Rx4 and Rx2. I dont need anymore cars but it is tempting if they can be had for a steal. The deuce is a four door both manual transmission.

Last week, I was offered a 1-owner totally standard series-I (71-73) RX-3 sedan with a genuine 100,000km on it. Still had plastic on the interior parts

10A-auto

Asking price was US$20k

Pity I didn't have the spare cash.

Back in SEP-06, an immaculate & 100% original series-II (74-75) RX-3 sedan was sold at auction for US$22k

They just keep going up..........

I don't know if you Australian / New Zealand guys realize how different it is over here in America. Vintage rotaries are probably 10x harder to find here, ESPECIALLY if you live in the midwest.

The Ausrotary forum kinda gives the impression that the cars are being taken for granted over there. Before someone decides to tub their R-100, they need to come over here and live in Missouri/Kansas/Illinios for a year! I think it would give them a different perspective on the worth and importance of the car they were going to cut up.

Just my opinion...

I have a rusty rx-3 I'm trying to get rid of on the cheap!

it's about 20 minutes outside of detroit, MI, just on the canadian side of the border.

you can see pics in the canadian classifieds section, make me a reasonable offer and take it home!

Hello James,

I know what you mean. I used to own a perfect 1990 RX7 TurboII that I sold in 1996 with only 23000KMs-original. It was like new and I have hated myself for it since. I now own a beautiful 1974 RX4 Coupe. I love its lines and lack of the B pillar when both side windows are opened. I have been saying it for a while and recently noticed that vinatge rotary's are going up in value. Just this month the May issue of Hemmings Exotic & Classic Car Mag has an article on vintage rotay's while I believe either Moter Trend or Car & Driver had one last month featuring an RX2. The word is getting out and collectors are taking notice. After all there are much fewer rotary's of the same period than piston cars, there is no reason why they shouldn't go up.

So, I agree, hang on to them becuase soon they will be out of reach.

Here's my baby.

regards

Max

That's exactly how I wanted my Rx-4 to look when it was done...I had that same factory color picked out to do mine in. Looks great.

Here are a few more interior & ext pics.

She's never been restored. Even the carpets are the original.

Regards

My RX4 is that same color (original paint) but my interior is black.

If you ever decide to convert to manual transmission and need parts, let me know.

Hello

I'd love to see some pics of yours. I would have much preferred a manuaal one but I couldn't be too picky as these cars are hard to find as it is.
I think my car is too originll to mess with which is killing me. I have thought of having it switched to a manual but as mentioned I'm scared to mess with it. what parts do you have?

regards

Max

The problem with switching that car to manual is that I imagine it would be extremely difficult to find parts that live up to the rest of the car.

Hello,

Agreed, I am so torn between doing what I want and the unique condition of my car. I have decided to keep it as is with no mods at all. That is unless things start to go and I cannot find the correct parts. I am thinking of looking fo another that is not as original that I can mess with but as always that requires money and worst of all space. Something a am surely out of.

regards

If you decide to convert it, you might find a reputable transmission rebuilder local to you and have them look into whether or not parts are still available to rebuild those old ribcage 4-speeds. If the parts can still be gotten you could then install a rebuilt trans which would suit the rest of the car. If the parts are not available, I bet you could source them from Mazda Australia.
