GSL LSD pumpkin into RX3 sp ?
GSL LSD pumpkin into RX3 sp ?
Do any of you know if a GSL (LSD) rear center section uses the same spline count as the rx 3 SP axles? Also is there a different spline count bewteen pre 83 and post 83 GSL (LSD)? This is realy important cus i have the car in my garage and the rear center is out and i have what i thought was a GSL center and the splines are different. But i think it may be a later GSL. Please help!

THANK YOU!! I thought no one would reply. Ya cus i dident know that and got a lsd from a friend and dident know that there was a difference. So here i am i got all the brakes apart, axles out, center dropped. And then take my axles out of the car over to see if they fit into the lsd on my bench. NO FIT. dang it. So the car sat for about 2 weeks and then i just put it back together so it wasent taking up the garage. But ya i guess thats my next step, find a 81-82 gsl rear center. Does any one have one i could buy?

Which early LSD? I thought none of the 7 rears would fit non sp? We need to recap here because i am confused.
I am ALMOST sure that there were 2 different rear axles sizes for the GSL. Up through 82 they were smaller, then in 83 they went bigger. I tried to swap what i am pretty sure was an 84 GSL LSD and my stock RX3 SP axles were to small. the spline count was way off. So i have been told that i need a pre 83 GSL and that will swap in perfect.

Ok.. I thought I had remembered that.
You can put a LSD in a non sp rx3 by using a sp drive shaft or have your non sp made longer.

the non-sp have a shorter driveshaft due to longer pinion shaft. rob,
can you recommend a shop in LA where i can get the axles shortened?
rotortuner,
the 81 lsd have 24 splines and will fit. I know where to get another one. I will let ya know.
Rototuner,
Well, I’m not going to use the 81 auto-LSD as Im going to install a welded non-LSD. If you’re interested, let me know. Im much more interested in the old barter system..I need a set of axle for my RX-3.

Ya im all about the trading also. Ill PM you. And im kinda interested in the welded set up. I know how to do it and what it is. But iv heard that people have had trouble with breaking axles. and my friend tells me that a welded dif handles like crap. Is this true that they dont handle well? Cus my car is going to be for the street and like quite a few times out to the local road races at a track.

FYI.
I finally got my 81 GSL 3rd member in my RX-3 with SP rear end, it was a straight bolt in. In comparing the SP and non-SP 3rd member, the non-SP is a appx 2" longer. For anyone who wants to do an upgrade on non-SP, there are 2 things you can do. Either make the driveshaft longer since the 81 GSL 3rd member has a shorter pinion shaft OR just install the LSD in whcih im currently doing since a have an extrta LSD. Its a PITA to check for clearance. BTW, no need to remove anything off the axle as the lenght are the same.
