early 12a rotors and seals

I'm building a 12a PP for my Rx2 and plan on using the 12a core i have, which is from an 84 1st gen. But i would like to have some sort of old school in the motor. i have a real clean set of early 6mm rotors and seals I want to use. Well, I have the complete motor and rotating assembly really. But I only really want to use the rotors.

Was there any reason Mazda swapped to the 3mm seals in the 12a besides cost? Same thing for the dual side seals? Would I even need to use both side seals?

The stock 6mm seals are carbon with aluminum centers I believe. And are solid 1 piece seals. These would work great for my PP motor.

I don't have an answer for this, but I'm sure Jesus Padilla at Kilo Racing can answer your questions, give him a call at the shop.

I have been reading up on the seals and the only real problem I can find is they dont seal as well as later seals. But on the upside, they do not wear the housings nearly as bad. And with 12a housings getting harder and harder to come by, that might be a good trade off.

carbon is a very soft material, even a tiny amount of preignition renders the motor as a coffee table. OEM 6mm seals are not anything filled, they are solid 6mm carbon.

i used carbon seals in my PP engine, and i was surprised at how many people warned me about detonation!

have fun finding 6mm seals, they were rare 10years ago...

+1

save the OEM 6mm seals for a nostalgic build, don't waste them on a built motor.

Don't need them for nostalgic builds, unless if you're going for 110% stock. my twin dizz has 3mm RX7 rotors which are lighter and have higher compression than the stock rotors.
