I believe the problem lies with the clutch disc. I believe that the spline count on the tranny may be different from that of the clutch.
The bellhousing should definitely mount. I forgot that I had a 13bt engine apart. I took that 13bt rear iron and it mounted perfectly on the wagons bellhousing...
This tells me, at the very least, that the 12a, 13b rear irons have the same bellhousing mount pattern.

The problem lies with me and getting the splines to line up! Its hard working alone...
The shaft diameter and spline count are the same...
Rx3
Disc outside diameter 8 1/2", spline inside diameter 15/16", spline count 22
Rx7 (1st gen)
Disc outside diameter 8 7/8", spline inside diameter 15/16", spline count 22

FINALLY!
Got the spare rx3 tranny mounted to the first gen 12a motor and positioned on the engine run stand. I installed the starter and made the start switch for the stand. After getting it all hooked up, I spun up the motor to get my compression readings. Both rotors gave me three pulses each and read between 85 and 90psi... Its a good one!
All thats left now is to hookup the essentials to get it running on the stand...
I'll have more pics of my progress soon...

Man I gotta say, that is so cool. Looked at all the pic's and read the threads. You found a diamond in the dirt, Good on you!. By the time we find them up here, they have the consistency of top soil.
Ps. Microtech and a turbo, or a big set of Webber'$ would make it the sweetest little sleeper.

Oh man this is awesome, if only i could find a mint 3 wagon like this!!!
What did you pay for it and was the original engine still in the car?
Howcome you didnt rebuild it if it was?
How about an update?

In November I made the test harness and got the 12a engine running on the test stand. Ran great! In the process of desmogging the motor and getting it painted up.
I still haven't decided if I want to go back in with a 13b. I'm getting that engine ready as well for the test stand to see what condition its in...
I still have to clear out everything from the engine bay so I can get it ready for paint. Once the engine bay is painted, I'll have more motivation to start getting everything back together. I did get a few pieces powdercoated like the battery tray and some of the trim. I would like to get the whole front suspension off and powdercoated as well while the engine bay is empty and getting painted.
The process is going a little slow right now due to the cold weather and other projects that I have going on at the same time.
Although you can't tell in this picture, the engine was running...
A little something I picked up during the holidays for the 13b:
New, ready to run, Holley 4bbl Double Pumper Carb on a Racing Beat intake manifold...

Very nice! I'm actually the most interested in your engine test stand. Care to elaborate in it? I'd like to build one myself for starting my rebuild and making sure evrything is sound instead of mounting it all back in the car only to have something wrong or something go wrong.
