Thanks Dave, progress is slow but its getting there. I've always liked the auto drag look. How's your projects coming along? I will be contacting for some work soon.

If you don't mind me asking where did you get the parts to rebuild the sterring column? My column rattles and is very loose. Nothing I have tried has made it better.

The streering column itself I did nothing except clean and re-grease it, replaced the column shaft bushing, 79-80 Top Column Steering Bushing from Mazdatrix part #49-1010-8871 works awesome!

Thank You...Hopefully this will work.

Can't wait to get her going this summer. I will create a thread and post some pics when I get a chance. Will let you know when.

RX2-Mazda-Fan 04-10-14 12:19 AM

Yes, post it!

Decided to tackle the completely rusted fuel tank. Trying the vinegar method, spent $12 on 5 gallons at costco, and $3.75 on rubber end cap from home depot, and filled the rest with water. 2 days later it actually works, it's dissolving the rust. I'll keep rotating it to get full coverage. Nice!

Just found this thread! What a great job you are doing. It is like a concours-type restoration. Love that you have plated/painted everything.

Keep up the good work!

Here's a preview of the inside of the tank, pretty nasty in there. Didn't help that I left half a tank of fuel in there for 10 years, completely forgot about it, till it came time to disassemble.

Time for a fuel cell...

RX2-Mazda-Fan 04-19-14 05:30 PM

I'll continue with this tank, I was considering a fuel cell if I couldn't save it.

After a couple off weeks of rotating the tank with vinegar, this is the result. It's pretty clean in there, the best part, there where big chunks and flakes of rust that were completely dissolved. Rinsed it and flushed with baking soda. I think I will hit it again with vinegar before sealing it, as you can see rust already forming. And have it powder coated on the exterior.

I upgraded my trans to a S4 TII on my 87 non turbo block, and had the shifter shorten to fit the stock location on the RX2. In doing that, well a bunch of other pieces also had to be upgraded to TII, Pressure plate, clutch, flywheel, and starter. I was a little intimidated, being my first time doing a flywheel, clutch, pressure plate swap. Having the correct tools makes all the difference, and much easier. While I had everything off, replaced the rear gear o-ring, rear eccentric shaft seal, and pilot bearing and seal.

This block was built over 15 years ago, oil pan had to be rotated 180° to fit over the RX2 cross member. I had lots of leak issues, most likely from the pounding and distorting of the pan to clear the oil pick up tube, and elongated bolt holes.... all my handy work. This time around, new oil pan re-driiled and extra hole plugged. Last thing to do, modify the oil pick up tube, as it doesn't clear the pan. Then give the block a refresh, as the paint is showing age.

This flywheel stopper was awesome, made the flywheel nut removal a breeze.

trans is almost all cleaned, Ill probably go through it, replace seals.

I spent more than an hour trying to pull the pilot bearing out, with the correct tool... 30 seconds, also got me a pilot bearing installer, also made it super easy.

Small update, cleaned up the tank with a grinder, after cleaning the inside there wasn't any gas fumes or vapors, so wasn't concerned it igniting! Primed and painted it with several coats of VHT paint. I was going to have it powder coated, but running out of funds.

Happy New Year!!

I have decided that my new years resolution will be to finish my deuce this year..... try to anyways, LOL.

I posted last year that I was going to attempt to restore my RE grill badge. I eventually gave up, after a couple of failed attempts, decided to leave it to the experts. Contacted Restoremaz out of Australia, he does exceptional restoration work, I highly recommend him. Super fair on his pricing, and sends pics of all the progress as it happens. Here's a sample of his beautiful work.

Took out the RX2, to fine tune the tail lights as they are fully tighten, but still are a little loose. Not sure if it the tail light gaskets, or the chrome rings need to be adjusted.
