Alternator wiring qustion

I am putting a 83 12A into a VW Beetle, on the back of the alternato there is the plug with 2 wires, shaped like the letter "T", which one is for the Alt. warning light? and is the other a hot wire?
Thanks

you need an ignition wire to the top terminal (T connector) for alternator to start charging. the bottom you dont need but you can connect a Volt meter

FYI... easy way to tell if you have it backwards is to put a test light between the neg battery post and neg battery cable when the car is off... if it lights up you have it wrong and the drain will slowly kill your battery
