Wow, that RX3 is just right in my neighborhood! Too bad I just spent a lot of money on a rebuild kit for my TII.

Alright what's the story with this??? Someone sent the seller of that SP this Question and here is his answer. Is the Seller Correct???

Q: Hi! I just wanted to let you know that the vehicle you are selling is "NOT" an SP model. If the car did not bring the side and rear louvers and the front "Kamei" lower, valance and the rear spoiler, you just have a Rx-3! Also, the VIN backs my statement. Just thought you would like to know this before someone buys it and returns it to you for it not being an SP! Good Luck on your sale!

A: you "DONT" know what you are talking about. ALL RX3s in 1977 and 78 WERE SPs. The reason this car did not come with the spoilers etc is that it did not have the "special appearance package" that mazda USA installed at an additional 435 dollars or so. I suggest you do some research before spreading false info. ive been doing mazdas for 26 years, before this car was even made, ive owned 20-30+ Sps, currently have 12,I know whats up. thanks for your interest. Thunder Yellow btw

Actually, I think he's correct. I had a 77 RX-3 SP a couple years ago that looked exactly like that one, and it was an actual SP. They had the normal looking ones and the ones with the appearance package in 77 & 78.. but all 77-78s were SPs from what I can recall. John M. just mentioned this recently in another thread.. John, you seeing this?

Still, he didn't need to be an *** about it.. heh

Mike

Yes, the seller is right about the '77-'78 RX3s all being SP models.

That car looks like crap compared to the one I'm about to put on eBay. ('72 RX3 completely straight and rust-free project with a '74 FACTORY rebuilt 12A with 17k on it.)

By stating that ALL 77 and 78 cars were SP's your saying that they only made 1500 RX3's in that time? Because there were only 1500 SP's thats all there is to it. The deal is that:
SP's came fromthe port with the wings and stripes (they were installed at the port, NOT at the dealer). people still could buy the "special appearence" package, but it was installed at the dealer and those became "SP's", but i dont think those were counted in the 1500 number. So its a matter of judgment as to whether that is a "real" SP or not. I would say no, because it didnt have the wings or stripes from the port. Im pretty sure that the SP came with the revised air cleaner that supposedly gave 10hp. did all 77 and 78 have those? My official opinon is that, thats not an SP because it was not counted in the 1500 allotted SP's by mazda. SP means "special production" which means it was a limited number and that number was 1500, not "all 77 and 78". Does any one aggree?

What makes it an SP isn't so much the stripes and other external fooferaw, but the gear ratios and the different intake manifold.

Did all the 77 and 78 cars have the same gear ratios and intake manifold? Also the blue car above is really nice, and i clicked on your site. I see that the underhood does indeed say SP on it. Now my question. Did that car ever have stripes originally? I would like to see if the car on ebay has that sticker? If it does then i guess they all were SP's.

I have to agree with Mike and the seller of the RX-3sp. From everything that I have read, RX-3sps came with or without the appearance package (stripe, louver and spoilers). The appearance package was produced in the states for Mazda. All RX-3sps came out of the factory plain and the appearance package added later. You have to remember that the RX-3sp was NOT a big seller. It was the wrong car (old design/high price) for the times. Add the appearance package of $400+ and you had a car designed for a younger person but had a price only a older person could afford. No 40+ guy would be caught dead in a car with spoilers and stripes! As far as the 1500 RX-3sps is concerned, I totally believe that was the total of RX-3s sold in the U.S. during 1977-78. Total production out of the factory in Hiroshima was only about 5000 units for worldwide distribution for 1977-78. Only 1606 were produced during the entire 1977 year with the later months production sold as 1978 models the rest of the cars were produced in late 1976. No RX-3 were produced in 1978 at all as production was being changed over for the RX-7 which was being sold as early as March 1978 in Japan. I also think that all Rx-3sp were mechanically identical except for transmissions. For such a low volume production, why would they have different mechanical versions and a potentail to have to be recertified by the EPA. I have attached photos from a Press Kit from Mazda showing the RX-sSP with and without the appearance package. Just my opinion.

Hi.

I 2'nd that, and if you are not into an FD and want cash instead, please send me a PM.

I understand Ebay is great for just letting it go, but in my point of view there is more to it. Like right now I have a really clean 323 GT-R (4wd turbo) with limited production numbers. This car is sought after by 3 of my friends, but one of them is definately not getting it, as I know he will just trash the car up. I rather see the car go to a good home for less, than see this car being torn up.

Btw, here is a 323 GT-R Turbo 4wd. Homologation model for rally.

SP seller correct

the seller of that SP is correct, they came into the port plain, the doc put the sport package(SP) on then,if you look close at the SP's the rain gutters don't go all the way down the pillars, the RX-3SP emblem is only on the right quarter panel, the quarter windows don't role down. they were only made in 77-78.

I love that GTR. I have an 88 GTX. its the best thing we got here in the states. What i really want is a GT-AE. But i would takea BG GTX or a GTR any day, too bad we never got any of them here.
