74 Mazda Rotary Pickup HELP!

I just got back from looking at a 74 Mazda rotary pickup. I found a guy that has all this for sale, 1974 Mazda rotary pickup 13b and runs, 1977 parts pickup (ford), and an 86 rx7. All this for 800 dollars. What I am trying to decide is if I should go for it. I am really thinking about this, cause the Rx7 I could always sale again, the rotary pickup would be neat.

I didn't get any photos; I wish I had taken the cam with me. I will try to tell you what the truck looked like, here goes. Its a dark red color, has rust in the bed, missing the pass side door panel, has 5 speed, running 13b, Halley 4bl crab, with header. It needs some work, the hood is a different color, has an after market sunroof. Over all the truck didn't sound to bad when he started it up. It has some rust on the door, just under the wing window, and has some rust on the door pillar, between the door and the window. Front bumper needs some work, has a dent goind out words. Is missing the trim on front of hood. Also has a slider back window. One thing that throws me off was that the 13b was mounted on the front, and now on the sides. I have always thought that the 13bs were side mount, but this one was mounted in the rotary picked like it’s mounted in my Rx2. One thing I do like is that its a 74 and doesn’t need to go though DEQ.

I would really like everyone input on this, could help me decide if I should just go for it. I have the money, I have the money, its just I would hate to spend what I have saved up. I’m just cheap I guess.. heh

I know no one can tell me what to do; I just can't make up my mind. I have my Rx2 that I could blow this money on and get it closer to running, or go out and by this pickup. Any input would be really great.

Thanks,

If you like the REPU I would get it, this opportunity may not come around for a long time! Especially if the REPU runs, 800 is a really good deal. For the condition you describe that could probably go for $1500 so if you change your mind you will always be able to get your money back.

That 13b could be from a 1st gen RX7. I think they had front mounts. Or it could be the rare 13b (mid 70's) not related to the later 13b.
Does it drive? If so, how well?
I'd worry about any rust that is in a structural area, like the door pillar. Are there holes? The REPU is a separate chassis and body, right? That makes it easier to fix the pillar rust. Don't want the door falling off, do you?

REPUs came with a 13b and it is a front mount as is the RX-4 13b. That's why you have to get a earlier front cover if you wanna mount a 2nd gen RX-7 13b into a RX-4 or something.

I went out and took a look over it all again. I was able to get some photos too. I guess that 77 parts pickup is a 77 rotary pickup also. I don't know why I was thinking it was a ford, maybe cause it has a ford hood on it. heh

simply a matter of asking yourself, do you want to spend the time and $ on a REPU project you can be proud of when completed?

Having a parts truck will help out too. and you can either keep for future use or sell what you don't use.

from what i can see that truck doesn't look all that bad.

Be sure to drive it and get a good feeling how it is. Then I'd ask him to drop the price to 500 and he can keep the 2nd gen.
