3-rotor Sandrail (pics)

Just a few pics to brighten up your Monday. This is a 20B-powered, single turbo, Microtech LT-12s EFI sandrail owned by a customer of ours. Should be a fun ride.

The IC is in front of the radiator, behind the passenger compartment bulkhead. No fan on it currently, but it will get one soon I believe. Perhaps even some ducting, but that's not my call. The customer dropped it off for us to finalize the Microtech wiring before lighting it off.

It will be loud and it will be fun! We've done quite a few sandrail projects over the years. This is our second in the last 30 days. Always fun stuff, whether it's a basically stock S4 block, an old school PP13B or 3-rotor turbo motor. No emissions, no sound concerns, no "streetability" issues...all *****-to-the-wall WOT performance with no compromises.

Is this the 20b that had the thick baffle plate?

Looks like a fun rig. Any dyno results are ballpark expectations?

Yes. You can kind of see it in the last pic of the first post. I don't have any shots of it completed, but here is a repost of the pic of the baffle plate (aka "windage tray" if you are not too particular). The pan was fabricated right off the plate, so it's a one-piece deal.

I'll have to ask what the expected power output is. I don't believe it's a shoot-for-the-moon type thing; more reliability and usable power band.

This is the first posing of this sand rail, completed, considering the frame just came back from powdercoating last week.

Oh, and the reason for the thick plate, in case it's not obvious, is to stiffen the engine. Rotaries are about as stiff as wet noodles, which is why virtually all the drysump engines use an ultra-thick bottom plate...we just adapted that thinking to a wet-sump.

BTW, Rob just told me the goal is a mild 410 hp...shooting for a broad powerband and reliablility. Besides, they can always up the boost later, if desired.

why?

15-20K of engine, turbo, ECU, fabrication for what??? Talk about a waste of resources

I have seen a 3 rotor rail in person. It was red with a custom paint job that said zoom zoom on it. Are you familiar with the car Blake?

I was out on my bike at coos bay jumping an 80' dune and all of a sudden I hear a loud *** vehicle. I turn around and here comes the 3-rotor. It pulled a wheelie while moving at a roll.

Waste of money? I think not. Wide open dunes, Wide open throttle!

Mendeola MD4S. Somewhere around $8K, IIRC.

Probably Pat Hughes. Did the guy have an ultra-nice motorcoach that looked like it cost more than a nice house in a nice neighborhood? If so, that was probably him.

Yeah, but everyone has nice motorhomes, trailers, bikes, quads. It cracks me up how much they drop into their vacation vehicles.

Sure, but some are nicer than others. I agree, people do spend a lot on recreational vehicles. My fabricator (also a sandrail guy) lives in his motorcoach. He built a nice pad for it right next to his shop and just walks out the door to go to work. If you can only afford one, it's not a bad option to own a coach instead of a house.

Let me also say, sandrails are waaaaaaaaay cheaper than auto racing, though equally addictive.
