Thanks mate, i just google searched it and found a few forums on making ovens. Send me a PM if you would like some further details.

Im slowly making progress on the engine. Finished the scavenge lines, powdercoated more fastners and permanently mounted the oil pump and alternator. i pulled the transmission apart just for peace of mind ( dont want it failing on the dyno ) , looks all good so will be reassembling it soon. Turns out its got helical cut gears and synchros? I purchased it thinking it was a dog box, never mind. I'll just run it as is and cross my fingers that it will change gears at 10000rpm.

what transmission are you putting behind that? If I can build an adapter plate like that, all my current problems will dissolve away

It's a Tex Racing T101. I purchased it second hand from racing junk. It uses the standard gm bellhousing pattern. From the factory it would be a dog box but for some reason this one has synchros.

Thanks. As the saying goes, if it's worth doing, its worth doing it right.

No progress at the moment because I'm on holiday in the United States for 6 weeks. Once I get home iv got my rx7 engine to rebuild, a series 1 rx7 12a and an rx3 coupe twin dizzy 12a. So there will be plenty of updates coming soon.

Pretty much everywhere haha. Im on day 25 of a 26 day bus trip from LA to New York. Im in Washington DC at the moment. Staying in NY for 6 nights then flying to San Fran for a 5 night stay then flying home. Travelled through 17 states so far. Its been full on but im really enjoying it. The highlight so far was going to an NBA game. ( Celtics vs Wizards semifinal game 6)

stickmantijuana 05-14-17 04:32 PM

great call on the sport game, but man, should've asked us about transportation. we all avoid greyhound like a plague. I rode that metal box once in college to save some money and never again man lol. unless you got one of the nicer charter bus ride from a travel agency, that would be a different story. train can be fun too.

glad you're liking it man! it's a beautiful country with so many cultures, climate, and natural beauty in all different forms. I think you and your car will be very happy here. :)

Bit of an update. The gearbox is now rebuilt, feels good to shift. Have been spending a lot of time figuring out the engine mounts, just about there.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...09fbadbe1a.jpgThis is what the isolator mounts started out as. 95A hardness polyurethane.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...2902085e62.jpgThen ended up looking like this.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...55072b4c49.jpg

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...5d4eb802d1.jpgThe bolt in the photo is the original subframe mount bolt. The smaller diameter threaded portion is now to short, therefore had to make up special nuts ( left in photo ). The bolt was too time consuming to replicate.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...5dbc1f484f.jpgAlso been busy prepping my rx7 parts for reassembly. Not aiming for anymore horsepower, only difference will be an exhaust dump pipe exiting behind the front wheel for the track.

Started work on the intake manifold. Used some lexan to make a template of the engine side flange. Using lexan makes picking up holes really easy and its sturdier than paper or cardboard. EFI Hardware in Australia has started making the throttle body setup. Im using the tapered bore throttle bodys, 55/53/50. With extra flow ram tubes, all anodized black. So im looking foward to getting those. The engine mounts are done, they just need to be powder coated.

This project is so sick. Do you have any idea of total cost involved?

I have a reasonable idea of the costs to complete the car, but would rather not say on the forum. A better way of putting it would be, is that the total cost of this car would be less than the price of a beat up rx3 coupe here in NZ.. If you would like to know some of the costs involved just give me a pm.

7rotater 07-07-17 10:34 PM

Made some good progress today. Finished the engine mounts with some black powdercoat this morning and got the engine mounted in the car this afternoon. Everything lined up and fits nicely. The mounts just touch the steering rack boots, should be ok though. Next step is to make the gearbox mount.

I'm a little late to the dance on this one but all caught up. Wow, this is an unbelievable build. I don't know if I'm more envious of your build or your shop. Thanks for taking the time and documenting your efforts.

7rotater 07-13-17 11:59 PM

The throttle bodys arrived today. They look good but looks likes the bonnet might need a big hole in it. . Its probably going to look similar to Mad Mikes rx7 with the air filters out the bonnet. Made in oil distribution block today, took 5 hours. It will supply oil to each of the main bearings. This is the second time i have made one. The first one was ruined by my rubbish chinese NPT taps. This new one uses metric fittings with crush washers. The top threaded part will be the oil inlet. The base of it is copied from the original oil pedestal, so i can use the standard mazda orings.

Brilliant7-LFC 07-14-17 06:22 AM

Couldn't you add a radiused pipe come off the lower or something to bend the ITB's sideways? I've seen that on many setups where instead of being oriented vertically, the ITB's either at a 45* or even 90* angle to fit in the engine bay without modification.

if that still doesn't work, I'd ask myself what my vision of the car is. If it's to be a radical car with a lot of curb appeal and flashy looks, I'd say stick them out the hood, no problem.

But, if your vision is to be more of a sleeper car with big power from an unassuming vehicle, then I'd argue you should begin to look into some kind of cowled hood, probably custom in guessing.

Just my two cents.

The intake cant be over the top of the engine because there is still no room. The front of the engine is actually quite close the the bonnet. Cosmos have a low hood line. long engine bay but not very high. It doesnt bother me having a hole in the bonnet. Its also a very common mod to do here in NZ on old school rotarys with an ida carb.

Its not going to be a flashy car or a sleeper. Its just a $2000 car with a fancy engine. No chance of it ever being a sleeper once its started up and making noise .

Im going to be making some of my oil lines and maybe fuel lines from aluminium tube. It looks tidier than bulky hose fittings. The tube is supplied in coils that needs to be straightened before making the lines. So i made a tube straightner yesterday, cost about a tenth of the price of buying one.

Been flat out working on my rx7 and the 4 rotor. Finally the rx7 is running again. From setting the endplay to smoking the shed out took me less than a day. Needs a bit of a tune but runs pretty good.

Im making a filter box/ filter holder thingy for the throttle bodys. The standard ida style filters dont fit the extra flow fam tubes. So had a look at the k&n website and ordered one of their biggest filters. Its oval shaped 22inchs long 11inchs wide and 6inchs high. Will actually fit around the ram tubes rather well.

Also machined the flanges for the intake manifold. Took a lot longer than i expected. Got a tube bender in the mail yesterday. Made up the oil feed lines tonight. Photos dont show that well, but they look really cool in person. Something a bit different from the standard braided hose.

The rx7 looking a bit beat up, a paint job won't make it any faster:lol:
