1976 mazda cosmo need some advice

Hey so i picked this Cosmo up for 4500 a while ago. I want to pick some of your guys brains. I got the thing to run and idle but there are some big issues with it. It takes a while to get the thing to idle because i think the nikki i had needs a rebuild. biggest problem is the oil control seal I'm pretty sure is leaking because a lot of smoke and back firing is coming out the exhaust. I've tried to drive it but when i put the car into drive is stalls out. First is it easy to replace that seal or do i have to tear the motor apart? second could having some huge vacuum leaks cause the thing not to idle well and have it stall out? thanks again.

most likely compression issues, and yes the engine has to come apart for the oil control rings so personally i wouldn't spend much time trying to get it running right until you can see how bad the internals are.

if its an automatic, there is a vacuum modulator on the transmission which is hooked to intake vacuum. if it goes bad, the engine will just suck ATF up, which causes a ton of smoke.
might want to check that first.

right, i keep forgetting automatics exist in these things.

it wouldn't totally explain the stalling issue though unless it's been going on for a long while and the plugs are fouled.

you could do a compression test, best to not beat around the bush when it comes to diagnosing a drivability concern when the engine may need a rebuild and solve most of the issues.

yeah you are right but I think my main problem is the accelerator pump right now. I want to get a proper rotary compresion tester
