1974 RX-4- Is it worth buying?
What's going on guys?
Here's what I just stumbled across. It's a '74 RX-4, 2 door, white w/ vinyl top. Supposedly it was parked in 1982, with 26xxx miles. There's some rust as pictured.
It's also an automatic model. He's asking $2000, and the cars 1100 miles from me, so you'd have to count the trip & trailer expense as well.
The car obviously doesn't run (Hasn't since 1982). The current owner (a non-rotary fan
) said he can't get the car to start. Apparently when it was parked, it was due to electrical issues, so it could just be lack-of-knowledge on this guy's part. The owner claims the only rust is what's on the hood, but it's impossible to be sure without seeing the car in person.
Anway, here are the pictures- Let me know your thoughts! It would be my first old school, and I would really enjoy the hell out of it!

Air conditioning.
The rust looks like it is much more wide spread than just the hood. Could be major. Offer him $500 and when he freaks, offer him six and hold at eight; for a while. If he has had it sitting for eons, and he's not a rotary fan, then if you wait a few days between offers he might drop his 2k asking price. Or he sells it out from under you. It's all a crap shoot. Trailering it for a thousand plus miles is expensive. Be sure to make a point of that to him, he may lower his price if he knows you are on a very limited budget. Also let him know how nobody wants an automatic transmission and how hard they are to sell and how much of a dog they are to drive.

if is from up norh is scary mine came from the chicago area and wow yep rust especially IL they love using that salt. but if complete is worth it thats why i got mine , Good luck .
Hit him again after three weeks. Let him know that you are interested in the car and your offer was not meant as a personal insult aimed at him. Get him to talk more about the car and his experience with it. Ask if he will move from his asking price. If he won't lower his price, then try again three weeks after that.
I was looking at buying this car also..but he was little far for me to just drive and look at it. He wouldn't send me pictures. With time and other stuff in the way I was unable to get the car. I contacted him again and he said it was sold.
if there isn't major rust then the $2k price is already fair.
i mean do you think you will find one better for less? it has decent interior, A/C(though disconnected) and about as low of mileage as you will ever find.

Would you mind PM'ing the guy's contact info? Wondering if he still has it.
I bought a '74 RX4 NEW back in 1974, and have never forgiven myself for having sold it to my dimwitted brother in law...who managed to have it stolen and stripped.
Here's a photo from 'back then'....
