How have I gone this long without seeing this?! An empty void in my life has been filled by reading this thread. This is honestly one of the most interesting projects I've seen in the 10 years I've been reading this forum. The workmanship is top notch with an attention to detail and thought process that few people could ever understand, let alone match.
Not being a big fan of muscle cars I've been waiting a long time for someone to do something different and unique and this is a perfect example. I sincerely hope that you are able to get it into as many shows as you can, one of them being the AutoRama in Detroit. My reasons are a bit selfish as I am there every year and it would probably be the only chance I would get to see this car in person. To be walking down row after row of big block V8 muscle car and then see a rotary Nova would probably make my year. Being a fly on the wall and listening to the discussion it generates would certainly be interesting! You need to use a hidden camera whenever you open the hood, edit all the video together, and then make a website. Good luck with the rest of the project. It's clear that you are thinking carefully about each decision and planning all moves in advance, which comes from a lifetime of experience modifying vehicles. |

Been out of town for work lately, so I haven't had a chance to work on the car much. Did manage to squeeze in the new radiator mount/shroud. It acts as the radiator and upper intercooler mounts as well as ducting to keep the aifrlow through the coolers.
|
looking good bro
|
Dam you do good work :icon_tup:

Very little time to work on things, but I'm managing to squeze some in. Finished the new transmission cross-member. Much better looking than the old one....lighter too.

Mad welding skills!!! Looks good bro!

Gracias, senor.

Also finished the new intercooler piping for the GT42r. The welding shop has a bead roller, which we put to good use.

Finished sumping the gas tank today...........for the 4th time. First try was back in the day, when I was still screwing around with flux core (you can guess the outcome of that one). Second try.......flux core:icon_no2: (yeah, I'm a slow learner). Third try was mig, and that one looked OK and was watertight, but I wasn't happy with how it looked. Fourth try was TIG and turned out pretty well, I think. So......three tanks, four trys, and about $900 later, it's done. Should have made the whole damn thing out of aluminum from the getgo, but damnit, it came down to principal. I'm not getting my ass kicked by no stinking gas tank!
|
Welding looks very good. The only way to learn is keep practicing. I think you got it!
|
I second that. Seems you've come a long way from flux core.. :)
I'm curious if you had given any thought to cutting a hole in the top and using an in-tank pump (or two) instead? Or is just mandatory on a muscle car that you have visible braided line and a fuel pump that you can hear from 20 feet away? |

this swap is taking an awesome american muscle car and placing an awesome engine in it.
you should throw mazda badges on it lol i can see people looking down the street, hearing the nice sound of a rotary, then seeing a nova, wondering where the hell that chainsaw sound is coming from. they will be blown away >=D |

The oil pan is finally done! Here is a writeup on the trap doors....https://www.rx7club.com/fabrication-250/oil-pan-baffle-plate-trap-doors-809995/ Should hold 4.5 to 5 quarts (I haven't checked yet, but that's what the Solidworks model said). The back of the upper level is sloped to help the oil make it into the lower chamber when under acceleration. The "lip" around the spot where the oil pickup tube connects to the engine is to help keep the oil from sloshing onto the upper level during braking. There is a hole at the back of each chamber to keep an air pocket from forming. The oil drain plug is helicoiled help keep the bung from stripping. All that's left is to have the machine shop surface the flange. Despite all efforts, a couple of spots on the flange pulled about 3/64". Checked it on the engine, and everything fits perfectly! You know what they say.....4th time's a charm!
|
Damn, thats a work of art. Very nice. :icon_tup: You should consider pattenting that pan and start producing them. I'm sure there are many, like Allen said, that would buy this.
|
Words cannot describe how beautiful that it! You sir, are a genius!
|
wow love this hope to see it at autorama
|
i love to see proyects like this one, I have seen to many fc's with a v8. But not much american muscles and sports with rotaries.

Finished the wiring for the Haltech. Still waiting on the dash from Covan's Classics so I can finish wiring the gauges. While I'm waiting, I made a new mount for the fuel pump. The old one was ugly.

Engine wiring is done. Almost time to pull the engine and send it off.
|
Hotness both car and skillz!
|
Everything looks beautiful except the ignition wires. Don't run them that close together, separate them a bit, especially the trailing leads :icon_tup:
