radiator mounting and just about finished with exhaust (need a nice turn-out). One of the pics you'll see a chrome bumper hanging over the rad, it's temporary for now, my plan is to have a single old style blade bumper. I still have to do the plumbing and the fuel line/pump and making it look good. So far I think the progress is pretty good for just 3 weekends.

quick question, is it ok to mount an oil cooler up high? does this pose any risk to the engine? I want to mount my oil cooler up near the top of the engine compartment where the fresh air vents are. I have a small fiberglass scoop there allready so it would make the best rear location for an oil cooler in terms of air flow, that is assuming that the height is ok. any input? thanks!

should be fine. i think mounting below the radiator on the RXs was just a matter of finding enough room somewhere for it to go . ..

Nope, a 12A can have more power than you can shake a stick at. Also, a 12A can fit behind the rear deck lid easier than a 13B.

I might do a rotary bug some day.

its a hell of a lot better than what i started with, 1600cc vw motor, merged header, no pionts ignition, big valve heads and the old soex single barel carb. I wasnt anywhere near 100 crank hp much less having the ability to go over 70mph. That engine blew due to a crack in the crank case right into my oil passageway, The conversion was cheaper than a well built vw engine of similar hp so I opted for teh fun route, not to menition I'll have heat this winter, Past 3 winters I have gone without.

Oh I'm still workin on a bumper setup, it won't be as good as the origional one but yeah readiator being right there makes it pretty vulnerable.

What are you using for a trans? Did you go with a kennedy engineered adapter/clutch, flywheel.
I've got a Kelmark with a '74 bug pan into which I installed a '87 13B TurboII.(Haltech E6K runs the injection/ignition) I got a trans from Stuff Transaxles with a rino case, super diff, 4-spyders, welded keys, bus CVs, swing away axles, overdrive 4th and porsche 944 stub axles.
I mounted my oil cooler under and behind the engine. I made the exhaust out of 3" stainless steel with a RacingBeat turbo premuffler and a supertrapp 3" in, 5" out muffler. If you want pics/info on anything I did, email me at wdwflash@aol.com
I've got a HotVW mag from years ago that shows the first rotary(12a) into a bug (superbug)

Yes Kenedy is where I got the adapter from, It took forever for them to ship it but the quility is top notch and nothing was missing. I'm only running the stock trans for right now. I hear that the stock one is fine as long as your easy on it, thats going to be hard so I"ll probably be upgrading soon enough.

Yes, I've heard the stock trans will be ok as long as the hp doesn't get to high. Since I put a Turbo in, I wanted a trans that could take 300+hp. I was going to install a bus trans, but the guy at Stuff Transaxle said he could make me a type 1 that would be strong enough as he has made them for rotary powered sand rails. Except for the 4th overdrive, my trans is their Maxsand trans.
Kennedy Engineered really does a nice job. They also made a 12lb flywheel for my rotary turbo and match balanced it to the original one. I've also got a 3000lb clutch set up from them. (I now have one leg with normal muscles and one that looks like Cal. governor Arny's leg!) Kennedy also provided some great info on the radiator system. I wouldn't have known to put a restrictor in line to help stop the formation of steam.
As I said, I have an old Hot VWs mag showing the first rotary to VW swap and it was a 12A, but they supercharged it.
As you,ve already found out, with the exhaust, water lines, etc in the rear of the car, it really takes some planning to put everything back there.
