Went to the Drags on wednesday.

I took my 82 to pacific raceways on the 29th. I got in five races when i was there. Anyways my two best runs were a 14.548 at 97.69 and a 14.541 at 97.64 I think those are about as close in time as you can get with a 5 speed. I was launching at 3000 with my tires set at 22 psi. and shifting around 6500 to 6800 coming across the line in forth I was at nearly 7000 rpm,. Now the good news I ported the waste gate on my turbo so my boost is pretty low. Basically i hit 4 psi in first then 4 psi again in second, hit 5 psi in third and finally 6 psi in fourth. A lot can be said for porting the wastegate. Before porting i could hit 12 psi in third relatively quick, a sure formula for popping apex seals. I dont plan on running a boost controler until I fab up a fmic, this car has a new project name, team ultra conservative, lots of gas, lots of cooling, little boost. Anyways wanted to share, not overly impressed with myself., but the motor is stock with a few bolt ons.
Thanks for looking, Have a safe fourth and dont loose a finger.

You really made it all the way to 4th at redline in the 1/4 mile? Are 1st gens really geared that differently than 2nd gens? Guess so, at pacific raceways I cross the line at redline in 3rd, and this was back when I was only running high 14's.

By the way, how come you were shifting at 6500 to 6800 rather than redline? Just curious.

Well yes i made to fourth at 7000 rpm, but I am running a 4.44 gearset in the rear, as opposed to the stock 3.90. Before I would cross the line at 98-100 in 3rd at 8100 rpm or so as a reference, that was with my old set up.. It was really bad when i had the stock 12a tranny and the 4.44, now with a S-5 turbo tranny i dropped my rpms down about 500 in fifth, for all purpose 1-4 gears are very similiar in all the trannys ratio wise.

Oh yea, shifting at 6500 or so because that when the power drops off according to the dyno i did at apple blossom, this is a stock turbo s-5 motor, no porting, so i don't see any point taking it over 7000rpm. Also i have a msd box on the leading with a chip at 7000 rpm. What were you running out there in the past at Pacific?

That is ultra conservative. Stock boost is like 8 psi, still thats fast for a FB and faster than stock S5 T2. Peak HP is suposed to be at 6700 rpm acording to Mazda by the way. What were your 0-60 times?

6700 rpm thats good to know. I will set my shift lift at 6500 that should cover it. 0-60 foots were a 2.143, 2.210. That was with street tires, 205/50/15 launching around 3000 grand.. I have a set of M/t drags at home, maybe another day. One of my races i beat a guy running a early 90's 240 z with a turbo swap as well, he said he was running 12 psi of boost. Ya i think i over ported my waste gate, because, its hard to get it over 6 psi.
Don sorry to hear about your car., what do you think caused it,?

only if you want to make more boost/power. If your happy with it leave it alone if not make a new flapper door or modify yours.

I want to correct myself. Max HP is @ 6500 rpm.

I ported the waste gate on my S5 JDM but I didn't go beyond the flapper. Boost spikes to 9psi max. Im very happy with that.

Did you port out both runners are just the shorter/smaller one. I ported the smaller one to about 1/32 of the flapper door and back cut it pretty good I took about 1/8 inch or so out of the bigger one, definately a lot harder to port that one. I also took my angle grinder to the inside on the cover plate for the waste gate and thin it out some, dont know if that helps a lot, but i was there and still had half a Corona to kill

So shifting at 6500 or so will get me the best results? Which was my original plan.

I used a carbide bit just like the one reted used. I ported the smaller one more than the larger one and left about 1/16 inch for the flapper door to seal. I back cut mine too. My port job was not as large as reted's. I put the S4 - ported next to the S5 and the difference is huge. The smaller opening on the S5 is bigger than the lone S4 opening. Mine has less boost psi than with the S4 before. It spikes to 9 and then drops down to 7. Anything 10 and below should be safe. Im not in the mood to push the limit at this time having blown 2 engines this year.

When are you going to run it with slicks? I bet your redlining 1st gear in about 2 car lengths. Did you try any lower RPM launches? I bet the only thing holding you back on your time is traction off the line. Last time I went to the track I had trouble hooking up.

You know alot more about racing than me but I just use the 7000 buzzer as a shift light. Im always too excited to concentrate on the gauges while racing.
