My car is finally running again... sort of. It would only run with the fuel pump UNHOOKED. When it was hooked up it kept flooding out, but unhooked it'd start to sputter, then start. And it ran for 30 min with the fuel pump fuse out.

Also, unfortunately it is even louder than these vids in real life The camera lost like 10-20dB at least somehow, its kinda crappy how loud it is. I'm actually thinking of redoing my exhaust, I need to build a 3" setup anyways...

OK, video time for those out there that care.

First one. This is where my car started for the very first time, but I set the idle much too high initially and it was at 3800rpms right off the bat. So I got kinda iffy about it and turned the car off, because to adjust my idle it takes a while.

Now for the proof my car hates gas! This is the second startup which I did with the fuel pump fuse OUT so the fuel pump was off. After it got going I went to plug the fuel pump back in because I figured it'd die soon. Plug it in, sputter, boom... car died. Interesting...

And now for the best one. This is when idle was set better, around 1100-1200. The fuel pump fuse was OUT the entire time during this, and then for another 25 minutes or so after the video ended. Ran the entire time, 0psi fuel pressure, fuse for fuel pump disconnnected. I'm clueless?

Holy crap. Something has you running way too freakin' rich. I wonder if your gas tank level supplies enough 'head' to actually allow fuel to be injected without the pump running (especially with your fuel setup). Maybe try jacking up the front to see if it doesn't run as long, then jacking up the back to see if it runs longer

You're still not using the stock ECU, are you?

 

If the freakin' rich comment was because of the smoke, think again. This is a brand new rebuild/port, that smoke is the engine assembly lube burning off, completely normal...

The car was on a downward sloping driveway, hence the gas couldn't have somehow been leaking up into the rails, since fluid doesn't travel uphill.

MSnS standalone, 4x550cc injectors, FD fuel pump, aeromotive FPR, s5 TII LIM with FD UIM and TB, custom cold air intake, heavily extend ported s5 n/a block with huge auxilary bridgeport (though the bridgeport was blocked off by me for break-in and is not open in the videos), giant exhaust port, RB header to borla xr1 midpipe to CS single catback, bla bla bla and so on.

My exhaust needs to be changed though, too small and too loud. I need 3" full system honestly to flow the ports I have.

Downward slope, 0psi fuel pressure at rails, fuse out. And yet... it ran quite well for 30 minutes. Hmm, my car is posessed by demons maybe?

Get it started with a tiny bit of gas, and let the velocity of the exhaust/porting keep the engine spinning! Wouldn't that just be super cool? I can only dream

are you sure u have zero fuel pressure like your reading a fuel pressure gauge??

That's my mechanical fuel pressure gauge mounted on the y-splitter for my parallel fuel rails while the car was idling.

If I plug the fuel pump fuse back in with the car off, and turn the key to ON, the fuel pump is primed and for 2 seconds the gauge reads 35-40psi until the pump shuts back off. While the car was running, this gauge read 0 the entire time. Picture as evidence.

 

Well, a car can't run without fuel... So it's literally IMPOSSIBLE your fuel-pump was disconnected... Right?

I mean, if I hit my fuel-cut switch, the car sputters and dies within 5 seconds.

It sucks you have so many *new* variables to work with.

 

You'd like to think that wouldn't you? But like I said, the power wire going to the fuel pump had the fuse removed, so the circuit was disconnected. And the fuel pressure gauge read 0psi, it's kinda interesting if you ask me.

I've had a few theories from tuners, builders, various shop owners, etc for rotaries but if I posted them you'd all probably laugh. They're kind of far fetched heh.

The most reasonable *sounding* answer I've heard was that the engine was sucking in fuel through the lines from the tank. How? No clue, but that'd explain the 0psi and the pump being off while the engine still got fuel. Another answer that was quite far-fetched was that the tiny bit of fuel inside the engine that caused it to be flooded helped it get started, and after that the enormous size of the ports, especially exhaust port, created a suction effect out the exhaust to help keep the engine spinning. That one I'm not so sure about, but some people seem to think it's possibe

I really need to bone up on my physics...

Another thought was that it really was extremely flooded and kept sloshing the excess fuel around inside the engine as it spun, in addition to or aside from the injectors still opening by the standalone and the remaining fuel in the rails going in and being enough to keep it running. That one I'm not so sure about, though, since it'd run out of fuel pretty fast.

 

There's no way...

Have you tried yanking a fuel-line off just to 'physically' check for pressure, lol?

Yah I like to believe that too, that it's impossible. But with the fuel pump fuse OUT, turn key to ON, there is 0psi when the pump primes. Fuel pump fuse IN, turn key to ON, 35-40psi when the pump primes. So I'm confused

Next step is to check for shorts in the fuel pump wiring and fuel pump relay wiring.

Also need to replace my e-fan fuse (blown) and tune idle a bit.

Dang- Sounds like your car needs an exorcisim! Obviously you like more than 10 blocks from me...couldn't hear your seven running. At least I couldn't possibly miss your car on the road in the dark as quiet as it gets around my neighborhood.

 

It was running at like noon or 1pm, something like that, on Sunday.

this may not be right or possible but could the injectors be stuck open, if that was the case then couldn't the vacuum just pull in fuel that way with zero psi. and if the injectors are just open than that would be a ecu problem right which could lead to a tps problem by it thinking it was a full throttle so its just dumping fuel in but without it signaling the fuel pump. i just think Jesus doesn't want you to drive it

Most likely, I'm near 100th. I live right by Inglemoore HS currently. I havent driven my rx7 since July, though, been driving my rx8.

Is your TII black by chance? I always see a black TII driving around.

How are you liking your RX-8? Is it as much fun to drive as a Turbo II?

 

Stock versus stock it's faster and handles a **** TON better, so yah it's as much fun I guess heh.

I seriously cannot stop smiling since I discovered how to drive the rx8. Once you know what it can do, how far you can go, and how it reacts, it becomes so much fun. I finally understood why all those magazines and car shows said it handled so beautifully. When I first got it I accidently spun it out a couple times and thought all those reviews were lying. Well I was wrong I admit it.

My friend has an s4 black TII but it is not insured, runs shitty, looks OK, and has other issues so he doesn't drive it yet.
