quick fc question

OK! im not a noob or anything i just dont know a lot about fc's. i know a good amount about fb's though, thats where my focus was. now i have a 2nd car, its a "88 gxl" but there is/never was leather interior, it has manual windows, came with an lsd, is na and has no sunroof. so my question is wtf model is the car? i have heard the only fc's to come with no sunroofs were gtu-s'. . . is it so? further info on the car, it has a spoiler (dont know if that matters, i highly doubt it), it is 5 lug w/ 4 pot calipers and i think thats it. o n i quickly checked carfax n they said it was a coupe (no ****) and it was an 87 but i think its still an 88 cuz my fb says it was made in 84 but like in august of that year so its definatly a 85. so some major help on this would be kindly appreciated n i would be very greatful.

Only Series 4 I can recall of the top of my head that was STRIPPED except for the 5 lug, 4 piston brakes and LSD was the 86 Sport model. I know you said 87/88 It could be a GTU and could have had fenders changed or the car was repainted and incorrectly badged. I have an option level sheet somewhere. I'll have to dig it up.

Sounds like a GTU to me, I had a 88 GTU that I got rid of too quickly, I shoulda kept it.

Do you have pics of it, it would be easyer to tell. (interior pics would help)

Burton.... look at the wing... is the mazda logo on the TOP side of the wing? or is it on the UNDERside of the wing.... If its on top than you can be sure that at least the wing is GTU. That wing is also minutely shorter than the S5 wing... i think thats cuz it was the first FC wing. Also: do you seats look like this:

Yes gxl's had Lsd, i should know i had a 87 gxl, leather was optional. but your car sounds like it could be a GTU. can you tell if the car has been repainted? check in engine bay, if its a different color under the hood. its new paint.
a good way to check would be to compare the vin# on an ID chart, avaible in the
2nd gen forum FAQ

I have an 87 base model with an lsd. built december of 86 with no power steering, no cruise, no a/c. does have power mirrors, back boxes, and power sunroof all stock. for that year the base model isnt even mentioned, and its not an SE or gtu or gxl and of course not turbo or vert. it makes it nice having nothing on it. mazda did some weird things when they were manufacturing the series 4 during a period of time, i think they had some left over parts or something and decided to just throw a car together. who knows. i dont go off the grids anymore cause my car is far from stock now, LOL. if you have any questions give Blake or Rob a call at Pineapple they know quite a bit about that sort of thing.

and dont forget- sometime in the last 20 years, someone might have swapped in the brakes and lsd.
my roomy had an 87 sport with no options, but 5 lugs and lsd. i think there's no definitive answer to model differences. options seem to be about as random as possible.

im almost 100% sure its original paint, its in real bad shape. . . but it did have an a/c in it i belive, the owner b4 me took it out n put in a dual e fan n some aftermarket speakers in the back (did a really shitty job of wiring). i stirpped out the interior but i think i may have a few pics of it somewhere. the interior was nothing special just cargo bins n carpet.. . .? it did have an lsd but the previous owner sold it when the motor blew, he ran it out of coolant n from what he described to me sounded like he warped the housing and coolant spewed all over n then the motor blew. . . sounds weird but dont care. the wing doest have any thing on the top side of it but i dunno if he swaped it for another one cuz its only held on by like 4 rivits out like 8. anyway next post will have pics, if i can figure that out lol

yah thats what my passanger seat is except black, its in really disugsting shape. but my driver seat is red with a leather bottom n its red. so i dunno if the guy just swapped seats or wtf he did but im utterly confused. the car has no external markings or symbols on it except for the lack of sunroof n 5 lug. arg its agrivating

I stripped the paint off the top and repainted the hood scoop which looks really nice. There is a place that is going to media blast the rest of the paint off the bottom side and powder coat if for me for around 100 dollars. If I wasnt travelling to take some fire tests I would have that done sooner but still waiting til I sell my Acura which is getting closer, I just tore it all apart and just need to unbolt the tranny and drop it then either rebuild or replace with a upull it tranny. Will worry about that when the time comes. Oh and by the way I found the picture I took of you flipping me off at Apple Blossom that one year that we were side by side. Here are a few pics of what it looks like now. Will hopefully get it done soon enough.

It is a 88 GTU. No question. I had one as my first FC. Only model to come as you describe. If it has NO sunroof, then there is no way it is a GXL. If it has no power windows, then there is no way it is a GXL. The only NA s4 besides the GXL to have a LSD was the 88 GTU, the "Sport" model did not. Also the "Sport" Model did not have the GXL style wing, it had a very subtle "lip" spoiler on the back.

^^^^^ true story. i thought it was a gtu but there have been stories of 88 gtu-s' so im really wondering if its one of those rare few. so now its narrowed down between 2 choices and either way its a rare model n im really happy just to have an fc in general. but having a super rare 88 gtu-s would be pretty cool 2
