Question in regards to shipping?

I've never done this, and am not sure if i will need to, but i was wondering how people go about buying cars from other states? (ones that are non adjacent and > 500 miles away?) I guess what i would like to ask is:
How do most people get their cars transported, through whom?
How do you end up paying the bloke whos' car you've just purchased?
Oh! and how do you get things titled?!

I know this sounds stupid, and i'm pretty sure it is, and im 90% sure i can find this somewhere online. but i guess what i wanted were some past experience replies, so i could have an idea how to go about doing this.

Found a great deal on autotrader and am looking to buy, but just duno wth to do. seller hasn't emailed me back and im excitied/nervous. So i thought i'd ask about the next step. (actually getting the car out here.)

it's actually kinda funnie. i have a math midterm at the U in like.. 8 hrs but instead of studying im trolling the forums trying to get a car.

i think i'm delusional! hahaha

well thanks again guys!

thats how i bought my FC, i found it...flew up there rented a car drove to owners location bought it ,dropped off rental car, then drove home...was an 8 hours ordeal....but i dont regret it one bit...,and as far as title he just signs it over to you and when you get home you take paperwork to licensing and get it registered under your name.

I used AutLog to ship my vehicle from Maryland to here and let me tell you I wouldn't do it again.
My blow-off valve and stero were ripped out.
I even shipped it on train in a separate truck container but still...
I guess the trains and trucks need to stop at every state and have a lot of thing inspected.
I'm thinking one of those guys stole it but can't prove it 'cause you have to leave your keys in the car for them to open things up.

Messed up!

This is very easy and safe to do. I just bought my FD from Oklahome, and my dad Just bought his Z06 from Detroit. I used a car carrier company, it was called nationwide auto shipping or somethign along those lines. It was like $1,100.00 total from Ok. They for payment on the car put the money in escrow using escrow.com. That way you and the buyer are protected with the cash and goods. You dont release the money till your good and happy after looking the car over once it gets to your house. It worked like a charm for my dad and I. Let me know if you have questions or anything.

Oh, and If I were you I would look for cars on the forum's forsale section instead of e bay or autotrader. There are much better deals to be had, and there is a better chance the previous owner took care of the car...

I used Direct Auto Shippers (DAS) to have my Turbo II shipped from Tacoma to Louisville, KY. The total cost with insurance was around $1100. Bare-bones shipping was less than $900 IIRC.

I wouldn't *recommend* shipping cars on a budget though... There's just too many people handling your car, and the potential for molestation is moderately high.

That being said, my experience went fine. The car was dirty when it arrived in Kentucky, but nothing was stolen, and nothing was damaged. Since everything was already scheduled and paid for when I dropped the car off at their depot in Tacoma, I was in and out in about 10 minutes. The car spent about a week and a half in transit--so it didn't really take that long.

I can't agree more. I recently purchased a 90 TII with blown motor in Idaho off the forum. Got a great deal on the car and had a different forum member trailer it over for me. I didn't see the car until over a month after I bought it and it didn't make it to my garage until after that. I don't think I would have had such an easy time or trusted someone off of Autotrader.

After I bought the car I requested quotes from several transport companies which ranged from $200 - $1200 plus an additional $150 because the car didn't run. I would have to say buying an out of area car and getting it in your driveway is a crap shoot. I got very lucky.
