Oregon is trying to pass legislature against aftermarket parts
I got a message from SEMA Action Network informing me that there is legislature going through that would prohibit the sale of aftermarket parts, mainly targeting tires. They are trying to use emissions as a factor against that. this has already gone through a community hearing, and is in comittee so we need to act now and email or call the people on this comittee. Here is the link giving more detailed information and lists the phone numners we need to call

Please oppose H.B. 2186,
Especially because of:
468A.205
(d) Restrictions and prohibitions on the sale and distribution of after-market motor vehicle parts, including but not limited to tires,
if alternatives are available that decrease greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles;
In these troubled economic times, reducing the availability of aftermarket parts for consumer's motor vehicles will have anything but a positive effect on our economy.
Also, think of tires - performance tires, which admittedly reduce fuel economy, can provide safer handling and may be helping to prevent the number of terrible accidents on our roads from increasing dramatically.
The pursuit of reduced greenhouse emissions is very important to all of us Oregonians, but this is not the proper way to achieve this goal.

i highly dought this will go anywere, if it did then all the tire shops will go out of business cus no one will be able to get OEM tires for ther old *** cars. in my opinion they would have no way to stop us about tires cus how r the cops gonna kno oem from aftermarket, its just like how cops really don't care about HID's anymore cus almost all new vehicles have them. this would also mean that no one can drive lifted off road trucks cus of there tires. i hope kulungoski's prius blows a tire and he has to front the cash for an OEM tire then he will think twice about this bill lol. but thats just my 2 cents. later
I'd still be kind of worryed. we've past alot of laws in the last few years that didn't seem to make alot of sence. just remember the people making the choices have the money to get there oem parts, where as most of us cant afford it due to us paying an *** load of tax so they can drive new bmws and caddys. and probably hate proformance cars especially those that are street driven.

I just heard about that this morning (I'm an engineering student, so I spend my whole life locked in a room with text books). I'm starting to think that maybe they're all communists and they're trying to make our economy completely collapse, so we'll turn to communism too. God damn communists!
Yah, commies or illegal aliens...
They're probably illegal aliens (the outer space kind) and should put their tin-foil hats back on, get into their space ships, and return to their home planet: Get-a-clue.
Eliminating a 35 billion dollar after market parts industry is just what this country needs to help get the economy going again.

Oops sorry about that, I forgot to post the email they sent me:

Dear Derek,
Thank you for contacting me with your concerns about House Bill 2186. Your feedback is important to me and helps inform the actions I take in the Legislature.
As you may be aware, HB 2186 is a part of Governor Kulongoski’s effort to raise environmental standards in over state and limit carbon emissions.
The intent of section (3)(1)(d) is to allow the Oregon Environmental Quality Commission to set standards for certain replacement parts that can increase greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles, not to ban parts. The standards would apply to both after-market products as well as original parts to the vehicle. The rules would be designed to prevent a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions from replacement parts while still ensuring a full range of consumer choice in products. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) does not expect this to affect a large number of products. The proposal is modeled after similar changes in states like California to improve, not ban, automotive parts.
In their testimony before the House Environment and Water Committee, DEQ made clear their commitment to amend the bill with new language to be written in cooperation with the Northwest Automotive Trades Association, the Automobile Aftermarket Industry Association and others to clarify their intent.
Thanks for writing me. It is an honor representing you in the Oregon House of Representatives and I hope you will continue to write me about issues that are important to you.
Sincerely,
Dave Hunt
