Angry My engine will never be finished...

I'm really starting to get upset. I've once again been fucked over by someone on housings I need for my engine, and once again I'm out 200 bucks and paypal says I cannot file a claim on the "quality" of the goods delivered, only if the goods were not delivered at all.

Seller told me that these were "some of the best housings we've ever pulled from an engine" and hooked me up with a "good" deal. Yah right... He showed me pictures of the good sides of the housings, but neglected to take pictures of the parts I discovered. I got them today, looked good at first until I saw the spark plug hole side.

Those lines aren't exactly minor. I can run my fingers over them and feel deep grooves, very apparent. These, in my mind, are JUNK and for display only. I'm sure there are people out there that would use these, but I don't see how these can be "some of the best housings we've ever pulled from an engine." Now here I am with no housings and an engine still waiting to be put together.

Man I am sorry. Personally I would not use them in an engine either those lines look extremely deep. That surprises me that paypal does not have a satisfaction gaureentee. What site did you get them on? You might be able to nail him there.

He can always die from fire if we put a match to him

I wouldnt call those "the best ever pulled" but I'd say theyre pretty decent, definitely average or above average, and that's normal wear. I've used such housings for years and they still pull 115-120psi compression and live for a long time.

Live and learn I guess... When I ran my fingers across them I just didn't feel comfortable using them, however as Kevin states (who I pm'd and showed this thread) I guess they're normal? It just feels so... odd to me to use something like that. Guess I'll inspect them closer, I'm kind of relieved this isn't as bad as previously thought, in my mind.

Dont get me wrong, it's by no means desireable...but it's certainly something I see a lot of with used housings. I cant really explain why that happens, though, it's just one of those odd wear patterns you see a lot of with used housings.

My main concern is just something that will last me a while, I guess. I'm going crazy with the porting and will be hitting 9k+ rpms with this motor and probably beating on it fairly well, so using brand new or almost brand new housings probably would be a waste, at least in my mind. So if these will last me a for some years, that's what I really care about.

Kevin's probably right, but can you catch your finger nail on any of the groves?

The good guy bad guy section may need to hear about this.

Good luck with the rebuild and finding parts.

Joe

Man, I threw away some housing that were in way better shape than that 3 week ago. They had grooves in them, but you could barely feel them. I would have given them to you too if I had known. Needed to make some space for my bike in the garage.

Surprisingly I cannot catch my fingernail on them, but they still feel deeper than I normally would feel comfortable with. Who knows, I'm more confused than ever now, and frustrated, and tired...

Then they are probably ok. From the first pic at the spark plug hole, one grove looks real bad but if it's not catching on anything, go for it.

Those picture must be some good close ups because they are deceiving (looks worst then it is).

keep your eye out for something better

these look marginal to me,, ok for a "get me by motor" but I don't think you should use them unless you have to. That is a compression building area of the motor, hence the small hole for the trailing plug. Try one of your apex seals against it and see how much light shines through. You can be alittle less picky if you don't mind pulling you engine again later.

with all the time money, and attention to detail your putting into this engine, im suprised you havent considered going with new housings. Its not all that expensive if you go through mazda motorsports from what I hear. All it takes is 2 time slips to get you in.

when i build an engine like yours, used housings wont even BE an option

Well, like I indicated before, with the amount I will be beating on this engine and high revs (9-10k) that it will be run at, I don't see a justifiable reason to get extremely good housings since they'll be worn quickly. I already have a sub 20k s5 housing sitting in my garage in near perfect condition, but I don't want to use it on this engine. I was just looking for something in the 30-70k mile range in good condition.

Oh and I considered mazda motorsports, but I have no timeslips or event stuff to give them to become a member, and my car is currnetly not moveable, so it's kind of hard to get them...

Plus I will have to tune a standalone and don't want to risk detonation during the tuning process with the nitrous I want to run, ruining perfect new housings.

I understand your reasoning. Good luck on finding the housings you need. You may try contacting some local rotary rebuilders and see what they have lying around.

As for the mazda motorsports, They have an option that you can become a memeber and aquire parts for a car that you are currently in the proceess of building. They have details on their website on how to set this up. Even if you dont use this option for the rotor housings, you can get just about any other part through them and its pretty damn cheap when you go through them too.

You could allways take that rx8 of yours down the track a few times too

I think that'll void your warrenty tho...

Yah I've wanted to become a member of mazda motorsports for stuff, I will one day.

And what Mazda doesn't know about my rx8, won't hurt them

Once this damn engine is done and the standalone and such is all dialed in and finished, I can finally turn a little of my attention to the rx8. Stock is just getting annoying... especially the suspension.

well the only difference between the s4 and s5 housings is the spot for the knock sensor... unless you REALLY want the knock sensor. I dont think it would be that big of a deal since this is going to be a N/A engine

And you have to have a matched set. S4 and S5 rotor housings have the spark plug holes in slightly different positions, so you either need 2 s4, or 2 s5 (or 1 s5 and 1 FD, same thing).
