Mazda Ship Coming To Portland
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Crews have righted a ship loaded with new cars that had keeled over onto its side a month ago in the north Pacific Ocean. The ship, the Cougar Ace, is being prepared for a tow to Portland.
The ship was south of Alaska's Aleutian Islands when it listed to its port side on July 23rd as its crew was attempting to adjust the ship's ballast water.
The Singapore government is investigating.
It has been moored near Dutch Harbor since Aug. 8, when tugboats pulled it into the port.
The Singapore-flagged ship is loaded with nearly 5,000 Japanese-built Mazdas.
The Coast Guard says damage to the cars appears to be minimal.
A naval architect was killed when he slipped and hit his head while aboard the then-sideways ship but the crew had been rescued.
