got and put on my fmic

eh i was bored after installing my greddy fmic kit so i took 2 pics to share so far, install was pretty easy except that the kits are made for jdm cars so the usdm brake booster is kinda in the way but i was able to work around it (just a really tight fit) tell me what you think

Nice... I've got the same kit. I just said screw it and chopped about 2" off the TB-pipe. Most people do this, and I just flared the "cut" end using some pliers.

well iv got the bumper on now, interior back in, everything rewired that needed to be, just waiting for my bov/flange, and fuel filter. since the kit didnt come with a flange on it i have to cut and weld one on to it, but should i put it on the hot side(passenger side) or cold side(driver), does it matter? thanks

Typically you want it on the cold side, within about 12-16 inches of the throttle body would be an ideal spot... At least that's what I've read from turbo gurus

Just be sure the flange and pipes are the same metal. alum and alum or steel and steel

Working on same project I see... Mine is the Corksport kit though. Just had to lose my A/C (A few pounds less- yeah!) I'm still trying to sort out the problems with the new standalone. Btw, my BOV is near the TB on the cold side.

Both of them look Great! Notice better performance? How long did it take you guys?

Can you guys send me some pictures of your piping? and IC mounting?

I have a 24x11X3" IC but need to figure out the piping...

"Look great" but performs like ****. No disrespect guys, and I dont mean to sound like a know it all, but an air to air intercooler is only as good as its endtanks, and those endtanks dont allow maximum airflow through the entire core. Just a little FYI. But it does look good.

Really, I've seen lots of IC's with endtanks like that? And I've seen a lot of square, crappy endtanks that would probably flow not so good. The stock top mount IC isn't very good at all...

What would Good end-tanks look like? Shaped like?

Thanks

i havent gotten to start the car yet, been waiting for a few new toys.

it only took me a 1hr 30min to get the intercooler and piping mounted cause the prevous owner of the car had a fmic installed so the holes where already there for the piping.

i will get some better pics up once the car is off the jack stands
another thing is why send instructions if they arent going to be in english lol, i cant read japanese

It took me way longer than it should have- Getting the A/C compressor out turned out to be a major pain... I wouldn't recommend using a keyhole saw and file as primary tools and trying to minimize sheet metal removal only to have to do it over and over.

I can't find pics of only the piping, but here are two pics of how it mounted (Used existing holes for the supports)...

I honestly don't know enough about the airflow variation between different types of IC's, but I'm always interested to learn more. Perhaps it would be more constructive if you could post some comparison data between different designs.
Maybe I should clarify that my own personal goal is to see a moderate performance increase with a FMIC combined with other mods as a "hobby mechanic". I am by no means trying to build to the performance level of those with far more experience, loftier goals and bigger budget... not yet at least!

Ic Tanks

HKS, Greddy, JW racing and a few other IC's

The Hks and greddy end tanks are similar. jw racing kinda square.

I would assume that the HKS and greddy units have had R&D therefore would be more effecient.

But the endtanks only differ slightly from Corksport unit...

Also If you really wanted a serious IC you'd go Water-Air...

I can explain what a maximum airflow distribution endtank looks like but I type slow and it would be way easier to show you guys. And instead I will take the time to tell you about a REALLY good book. Before you do anything, read a book called MAXIMUM BOOST by Corky Bell. Its a Bible, Koran or whatever you believe in for ALL turbo guys; import, domestic, piston or rotary. That book gave me (a regular dude) the inspiration and knowledge I needed to do all those crazy things I did to build my old 10 second DSM(that I sold...sniff sniff), and now to put a 4G63 in my FD. It'll explain everything you need to know in a lifetime about turbochargers, intercoolers, manifolds, airflow, fuel injection, carburetion, every ******* thing you need fellas. Forget all those other stupid "how to hook up your Honda/Mazda/Toyota/Mitsubishi" books that you dont learn a damn thing. MAXIMUM BOOST is the bible fellas, read it!!! $25 on ebay!!! Damn I feel like Oprah Winfrey...lol

Well I could go ahead and buy Maximum Boost, but since I just got my car running again I'll probably first get it tuned and find out where I'm at power-wise. Maybe someday I'll know enough to be able to throw my Haynes into the trash and not have to look at the FSM all the time...yeh sure! ;-)
Of course there is a wide range of opinions on how to go about adding mods, but I think my engine builder got it right when asking the following questions before making suggestions: 1. What is your goal/ purpose of the car? 2. How much money do you want to spend? 3. How much of your own time/hassle/work are you willing deal with?
Maybe I'll find out the answer to more hp through magic end tanks somewhere later down the road... after I step up to a 20B!

I'm sorry, 4g63 in an FD? I'm curious as to why?
