Coil problem

So, I'm trying to tune my weber, and I notice that my trailing coil is sparking from the pos. side up into the boot and around to the neg post. What the hell is that? Looks like I'm getting as much spark outside the coil as through the wire.

you probably just need new wires. if not IDK. I'd just remove the ground from the coil and not run trailing. or pull the ignitor plug. trailing doesn't effect the power at all. thats if a new wire doesn't fix it. but if you need to get past DEQ or clean air. you may need to fix it.

Get new wires or see if you can find som dielectric silicone grease and smear it on under the boot. It should block the path. Do not disconnect the trailing side. It might only be worth 3% of the power but remember thet at 250HP that is still about 8 HP. Unless you like the smell of more unbuned hydrocarbons lurking around your car?

I don't have any dieletric silicone, but I put on a new coil wire, and even changed coils, but it still arcs up the underside of the boot. I tried wrapping it in electrical tape too, no help. It makes my tach jump around at times too. Very strange. Neither of the high output coils that are running my leading plugs are doing this.

Also, it is arcing from both the neg side and the positive on the coil. Any ideas why?

I can't say I have seen this before but then again I never did the DLIDFIS. I always used MSD 6ALs.

So it should get positive from a relay and then it gets its negative from the ignitor... just thinking out loud here but maybe since the signal for leading is split in 2 for the 2 coils and triling is getting it full force it might just be that much stronger a spark.

Do you have any pics of the setup that you can post?

You may need to space the boot out further on the coil. MSD sells an extension that adds about 2 inches to the overall length of the coil. This just might do the trick.

Pics of the DLIDFIS

I still gotta clean up the wiring, but need to get the coil bugs worked out first.

Problem solved!

Brand new igniter was bad and wiring schematic for HEI modules is incorrect. Replaced the trailing igniter and coil stopped arcing, then swapped polarity on all the igniters and my stutter, idle, and timing woes dissappeared. So, the past week I've been chasing ghosts. The issue was defective instructions and faulty "new" parts! ARGHHH!!!! Good news is that now she fires right up, idles good and doesn't bog or die when I give her throttle. Now I just have to go through and clean up the mess I made of my wiring and redo it AGAIN. Then a tuning and I should be good, I HOPE!

good to hear. thats why I just went with the second gen coil mod. simple wiring, and clean look. but I think the DLIDFIS is just as good and in a way cooler for being shade tree style

lol. I am laughing with you not at you. Similar things happen to us all. All we can do is laugh it up and move on to the next part satisfied that we figured it out. Way to go.
