Question 13b questions ....

Ok, I'm still a newb to the 13b's so I have alot of questions for you 13b guys. All questions relate to N/A stuff.

1.Is there a difference between the s4 and s5 irons? If so, how do you tell which is which?
2. Will a 6 port SE intake bolt to an s5? Or is there a difference in the different 6 port motor intakes? (intake would be an IDA or IDF style)
3. How difficult (what is involved) is it to put an s5 into an fb? Aside from the SE front cover and oil pan.
4. Is there a way to use the fb tranny with an s5?
5. If I took a set of nice SP 12a irons and used repu housings and rotating assembly to make a "frankenstien" motor, what the best guess at hp?
6. If you had the above "frankenmotor" and an s5, which would you use in an fb and why?

Thanks to anyone that replies or contributes to my "13b" education.

Ok, one more question to add to the list.
7. Which rotating assembly would be better suited to my "frankenstien" motor, th GSL-SE or the repu? Whats the difference?
8. Can I use the repu front cover, or does it have to be the SE?

Lets start at the top.

1. The only difference in the s4 and s5 n/a irons are for emisssions purposes. There is an air injection port below the primaries on the s5 iron, and on the s4 it is on the secondaries instead. It sounds like you are going carb, so there would be 0 issue here. Also, s4 motors have an EGR port and s5 motors do not. if you use s4 irons you will need to block off the egr port.

2. The primary part runners are taller on the S4 and s5 blocks vs the gsl-se block. Racing beat sells a different IDA manifold for SE blocks and s4 and s5 (notice they sell the same manifold for s4 and s5) You would want the second gen IDA manifold if you putting this on a S5 block in a FB chassis.

3. There are a couple tricks with putting the s5 block in a FB. As you already mentioned you will need a GSL-SE front cover and oil pan. Other than that it drops right in. The issue then becomes what water pump setup you are going to run. I would advise you to use a s4 waterpump setup if at all possible. You can use a s5 one, but you will have to do some grinding on the GSL-SE front cover and the waterpump and housing to make it clear the front cover. Also the lower waterpump outlet is at a very bizarre angle on the s5 pump to make room for the electric OMP. ( I would assume since you are going carb you are going to premix, and if you arent, I would reconsider not premixing ... DO IT!) Anyway this makes for a very akward angle connecting the lower waterpump outlet to the radiator. It get very very close to making the hose kink. The s4 setup does not have this issue as it used a mechanical OMP.

4. It bolts straight up. Enjoy.

5. No freakin clue.

6. FC engine parts are easier to come by so I would use the s5 motor. Plus it has 9.7:1 compression rotors. It'll make for an easy swap if you ever blow it up. Also interchangeable with a s4 block.

7. I believe the GSL-SE had lighter rotors so I would use that.

8. I dont think you can. If I recall the crossmember for the repu is like an inverted version of the FB one, so the spacing of the front cover is a little different.

Hint... You can use a 12a front cover without a problem. The only advantages to the GSL-SE front cover is it has a pretty good spot for a turbo oil drain (this spot likely WAS used as a turbo oil drain the the JDM 12a turbo) and you can attach a s4 OMP to the GSL-SE front cover.

None of this is an issue if you arent turboed and will premix.

If you look at my avatar, thats a S5 motor sitting in my old FB... so been there done that.
