No, the motor units rarely fail - usually the cable mechanism gets corroded & janky over time and neglect, then things get jammed up. Try raising & lowering it with the manual crank - if the roof panel is still difficult to move, it confirms a buggered up mechanism and the motor is probably OK. if you don't have the manual crank that came with the car, IIRC a 6 or 8mm Allen wrench fits and can be used.
