Description:
This 1983 Mazda RX-7 was purchased from my neighbor (the original owner) in May 2021. It had been sitting in his garage for almost 30 years, last being registered in 1992. During his ownership, he called this RX-7 his "disco car" and would only drive it on weekends as he had a company car for every day drives. When parked in 1992, this car had only 13,650 miles during the 9 years it was driven.
Since my purchase, I have done everything needed to make this car reliable and fun to drive again. The full list is attached in one of the pictures, but in short:
-All fluids replaced incl. trans, rear, engine, coolant and brake/clutch
-New (used) gas tank
-All filters incl fuel, air, brake and oil
-All rubber hoses incl. heater, coolant, fuel, and brakes
-Spark plugs and plug wires
-Did not change the belts because there is no cracking and look like new, but have replacements included
-Front Pads, rears were like new
-Replacement power antenna
-Idler Arm bushings
-New tires (was still on the original set when I bought it)
-New clutch disk
-Front end alignment
-3 Stage Paint Correction
-Ozone interior
There are some blemishes from being in a garage from 30 years and I've attempted to make them apparent in the pictures. I contacted a PDR expert and he estimated $1000 to pull all dents. The only rust on the car is where someone in the cars past jacked it up on the floor pan and dented it, however it is only surface rust. The rest of the underbody is coated in "Waxoyl" a treatment that was offered from dealer at time of purchase.
After completing all the maintenance I've been driving this car and it so much fun! I've driven it ~300 miles since the resto and it just gets better and better each time I drive it. The A/C actually blows quite cold, the radio works great, every light works, and in general this is like driving a brand new 1983 RX-7. The "slow car fast" ethos really applies here. I wish I could keep it, but with a kiddo it just wont work! Proceeds are going towards a fun wagon.
The only area of improvement I can see that I haven't been able to fix yet is that sometimes the idle fluctuates. So far haven't ruled out vacuum leaks as there are a ton of lines but have been hunting around and cannot find any leaks.
Last note, this car will go on Bring a Trailer in ~3 weeks if not sold on here. This a prime chance to get a super low mileage 1st gen RX-7 and enjoy it for years to come!
