Yes.. another s4 to s5 13bt conversion question!!

Hi Guys,

After scouring the internet for hours.. I have come back to here and another local site for help.

Before you ask.. yes.. yes I did search.. a lot.. it was painful.. I have done no work for the past 3 days because of it! I am just hoping to get a better idea if I am following the right reasoning in my situation.. as most of the swap questions were around cases where the car originally had an engine etc to begin with, which was usually an NA

I am still weighing up every option for what engine to go with in my S4 FC and this is definitely one of them.. a recap and problem:

I currently have a rolling S4 turbo/manual shell.. its missing all running gear and pretty much all engine bay components (oil cooler to reservoir tank... everything.. its bare, bone dry), has a pretty wrecked dash, stuffed from bumper and is looking pretty worse for wear.

after weighing up a number of options I have been looking to just grab a series 4 13bt and box to chuck in as I do have the s4 loom sitting in wait (both engine and interior including ecu), however I have noticed I can pick up a number of series 5 motors much easier (whether these are genuine s5's thats another question). Obviously the problem there being that the s5 motors are slightly different and would require the transfer of s4 parts onto the the s5 motor.. but since I don't have even an old stuff s4 13bt and cant even find one... its sounding kinda painful.

One thing I had been considering is grabbing an entire s5 turbo front cut (which are available), which literally includes everything the factory saw fit to put in an S5 right back to the dash and gear area. Since I essentially have a bare shell missing everything, this did seem like a good idea.. I would just strip the s4 remaining components completely out including the dash and interior loom and literally transplant the lot across.. I would even have a working model to go from with the front cut.

The more I read though the more the forums bag this idea... am I missing something? although I realize it be a pain in the ***.. it would be about as much work as doing the basic s5 transplant by adding s4 engine bolt ons to the engine, which I don't have so would have to source, buy and freight to me, and at the same time it would replace my damaged panels and bumper, give me a new dash and give the added benefit of the s5 engine and gearbox as well as all the miscellaneous stuff in the engine bay I don't have.

is my logic flawed?

again.. really did try to search for this, but nothing quite seemed to fit to my situation.

cheers

Rob

It's going to be a major pain due to the fact that the wiring between S4s and S5s is VERY different. If you take the S5 engine, emissions, front harness & instrument cluster harness from the S5 clip, much of this will be settled. But you'll still need to account for differences in the rear harness and possibly the door harnesses. It can be done, but it's a lot of work.

The S4 TII engine route is far more straight forward. I happen to know there is one for sale in the classified section here: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-rx-7-1986-1992-parts-194/very-clean-low-mile-s4-tii-jspec-longblock-f-s-866789/. Japan2LA is probably the most respected importer in the RX7 community, and can actually give you compression numbers on the engine.

EDIT: you'll need some more posts before you can view the classified thread, but you can PM him directly too.

Thanks mate, much appreciated.

I figured I was in for some painful work to do it, but considering the effort I would need to go through just picking up a s4 engine less all the additional engine bay components, including gearbox, radiator the works etc (which I would have to track down, purchase and freight to me) transferring a front cut components seemed pretty similar effort-wise. If I could find a s4 front cut it would be ideal.. however for some reason only S5's ever seem to be available.

I figured I would have a bit of splicing with the rear loom, but had completely forgot about the door harnesses.. hopefully these are fairly straight forward, alternatively.. the doors on my s4 are a bit rough.. I could always pick up some s5's for cheap.. problem solved?

I realize it sounds like a bit of a round about way of doing things... but I get the feeling with the front cut, after rough pricing for all the extras I would need to get with just picking up a s4 I would be spending the same amount of cash and time. Plus i get the added assurance with the front cuts of a working motor and often a warranty (do rotary warrantys actually cover you for anything? ha)

Cheers mate

Rob

Oh and for some reason I can view the classified, but unfortunately since I am in a rather different part of the globe to you guys (New Zealand), the freight might be rather expensive.. probably easier to get one straight outta japan
