Won't idle after warming up: Carburetor computer problem?
I was thinking of selling my 1985 Mazda RX7 GS, but it won't idle after warming up (about 12 minutes). I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep the engine from dying.
I took it to the motor pool of the military base I work on and the mechanic said that there are computer chips in my carburetor that are messed up, and I should find a 1979-1980 carburetor without chips to install in my car.
First, does this sound plausible, and do the carbs from 1980 and earlier lack these computer chips?
Second, where is a good source of old carbs? The only carb I've seen online is $377 (at importcarburetors.com), and I'm not sure what the install would cost.

Huh??? There are no computer chips in any 7 carb. There are some solenoids attached to it (emissions related stuff), but that is about it. Are you sure he didn't say "circuits"? If he did, he is talking about the various fuel/air paths inside the carb used in the fuel metering.
The carb can be rebuilt (rebuild kits are cheap). You just need to keep track of all the little parts and gaskets to make sure everything goes back together correctly.

Check out www.sterlingmetalworks.com for all sorts of info on rebuilding, maintaining, and adjusting these carbs. Could be as simple as an adjustment or a vacuum leak. Time for research and learning.

Thanks
Thanks for the replies. Perhaps the mechanic did say circuits instead of chips, but he definitely thought I should try to find an older carb for some reason. Everything else I read says a rebuild kit is the answer. I'll see if can IM vipergts_3; a local expert would be an great resource.
When I get it running again I may decide to keep it for a little while longer; it is kind of cool the way the old girl can still turn heads.
