wiring harness mess

I picked up an rx7 in October and haven't had much time to work on it. (I have it parked until spring as I don't have a spot to work on it in the winter).

So... it's a 1979 with a 1983 engine. The previous owner also said that the '79's wiring harness was bad and used the '83's harness. There are a *ton* of loose electrical wires from the harness that aren't hooked up to anything. The car runs fine, but I don't have any reading on coolant temp. The coolant light flickers occasionally, but it has always been full & doesn't seem to be overheating.

I was wondering if I should be worried about all the loose wires or if it's OK because of the year difference. Is there a way that I can clean up the wiring mess or should I just have them "out of the way"?

When it warms up here (in april or so) I'm going to pull the engine and do a full rebuild. I'd like to take care of anything else under the hood at that time as I'll have more room.

The 83 wiring harness is equiped with alot of plugs/wires for emissions and etc. that weren't yet equiped on the SA/79 models. So it is expected to have "extra" wiring. If you have no temp reading on the rad, check the thermostat. you may have a bad sensor, not wiring related. The coolant fill sensors can be touchy at times, mine occasiionally flickers and then goes away. Usually if I add a few cups of water/coolant, it is fine. Depending on what you are using on the engine, you can "deloom" the harness and remove the majority of the wiring. Keep in mind if you do, You can't go back without running new wires. Alot of people deloom if they remove the extra emissions from the motor. There are several threads in the 1st gen archives on this. You'll want to download a copy of the 83 wiring diagram from the FSM and a copy of the one for the SA to use for double checking. Both can be found in the link in the FAQ section.

Yeah, get the factory service manuals/wiring diagrams for both years and work through them to identify each orphan connector.

Have fun.

Thanks... I guess I have a bunch of wiring fun ahead of me. At least I know it's doable:P
