Ok my car is a 87 fc with only an air filter as a mid list but it made the sound before the filter , it is na and is 5 spd . It only really makes the sound when I accelerate or let off, if i'm holding a steady speed there is no sound at all

Does the wine increase as the speed of the car increases? Or does it increase as the engine speeds up?

There are many causes of a noise like this so some more info is needed.

Transmission problems are very common on the NAs and they start as a whine in lower gears when the transmission is under load.

 

Sounds transmission related to me... Try to isolate the noise as much as you can.

Does it happen when the car is in neutral revving it up? Or only when the car is in gear on accel or decel?

 

another test, see if it goes away when u push in the clutch
