Where To start 1984 12a

Hello everyone, i guess ill start by saying this is easily the best forum i have ever seen. The amount of info here is rediculas. Well my question is i just bought my first rx7 1984 12a engine 91k original miles and i love it, Has a ton of pep but i need to know where to start. I eventually want it to be a sweet speed demon but still be a daily driver. I dont know which new carb i should get first or even if thats a viable thing to get right off the bat. I do all my own mechanics, Well i guess if you guys can toss me any info i would love you forever

Exhaust ~~ start with a new exhaust system just slightly bigger than stock...do you have emissions in your area or are you already past emissions as a "classic" car?

No, not for another 5 Years. Well what am i looking for as for size of exhaust since i read on here that you really dont want any back pressure. Also whats a good Carb to put on this. Im thinking about rebuilding and throwing a turbo on it but gonna start out with baby steps first

If you've got a stock exhaust, then there's really nothing to be done with the carb situation except to have one rebuilt by Sterling specific to your application. If you've got emissions worries that won't go away for another 5 years and no inspection "friends", you're hands are really tied...best then to work on wheels and suspension and get that all sorted out for the day when you can step up the power...a little 25 shot of nitrous couldn't hurt if you just got to have power now.

+1 for the Sterling carb. It'll the wake the car up to a degree, but it really shines with an exhaust on the car. The good news is that if you've got a Sterling carb on the car in 5 years when you upgrade the exhaust, it'll feel that much faster once you do it. Most owners don't take the kind of care of their cars that we do, so things like Hawk HPS pads, a good brake bleed, and new ball joiints/idlers/etc. would make the average car feel a lot better without much cash, plus make it safer and more comfy in the meantime. You can also look at shocks and brakes. If your car's an S or GS, keep your eyes out for a GSL or GSL-SE car that you can rob the suspension from to get a disc rear end (for the GSL) or upgraded front and rear brakes (for GSL-SE). Both GSL and GSL-SE also have a limited slip, which is nice.

Finally, go into to the 1st gen non-technical, and add your car to the registry if you've got a mind to.

Emissions does make it tough. Hard to do any real power mods without trashing your chances of passing emissions testing.

I agree with the idea of starting with basic tune up items. Make sure cooling system and brakes are in top shape, then go for suspension. A few hundred bucks for suspension parts will turn your car into a Porsche eater in the tight twisties.

Well i do have a friend who lives 40 minutes away in another county. I suppose i could "say" i live with them and get my **** done there so i don't have to worry about smog and all that other bull crap that comes along with it. Im looking to do a nice upgrade. Im already ditching the a/c and putting in an exhaust im guessing 3.5" is what your wanting??. How much does sterling charge on average for a carb overhall

Okay, let's see here:

1. Exhaust; be very careful what you get. The temp of a rotaries exhaust will melt most systems, VERY HOT. I would recommend that you go to the 1st gen section and do a little searching. Some have had custom systems made that sound good and have held up. Other than that, Racing Beat is about your only choice.

2. Sterling can rebuild your carb, or he can turn it into a Sterling carb (huge difference). Head over to his site and start your research. Sterling carbs are pure sex by the way. www.sterlingmetalworks.com

3. For suspension stuff, check out www.re-speed.com

This is not some big cube V-8 or monster turbo job when we talk 12A's...3.5" exhaust will kill performance completely...some argue that 2.5" is too much.

lol alright, last car i owned was a ford mustang. Ive been taking a look at racing beat their prices seem to be pretty nice. Ill look for some 2.5" tubeing and see what i can do about welding that pulse muffler to that and getting that whole thing sounding a little nicer and running better. I contacted sterling but do they have like an average price they sell their redone carbs at?

If you have questions concerning Sterling carbs, visit his forum: www.sterlingmetalworks.com\bymc

Go with the Racing Beat street port system. Or, search on what others have done in the way of custom systems. Some have built systems at half the cost, and claim they work great...
