Best way is to post some pictures and we can probably narrow it down to a 1 to 3 year range. Mostly, we can tell by things like the oil cooler, the emissions attached, etc. If it is a bare block, it is a little more difficult to determine the year. Also, if the engine had been rebuilt or swapped from another car, it is really difficult to know what is really inside there without opening it up.

My first guess would be '81-'82, but that engine may have been rebuilt/opened since it has been painted. There are also a lot of non-stock things attached to it (carb, trans, pulleys, etc.), so that makes it more difficult to say what the year actually is. If it was completely stock, you could tell a lot by the emissions, etc.

Is this an aftermarket flywheel and the rear counterweight from an automatic?

flywheel pic in previous post shows that it's an aftermarket with replaceable friction surface. only in focus pic u've posted. as for the yr, it could be anywhere between mid 70's to 85. that tranny looks weird tho. kinda like a rib case with remote shifter. and what kind of pulleys is on it?

Rear counterweight s\hould help me out huh? Guess I don't need to buy a rear counterweight. I will install engine in a 1974 VW beetle. I will buy a kit from KEP. Use a 6 volt flywheel and 6 volt starter. I don' know about the pulleys.
