What would you do if...

If you were to locate a nice roller but didnt want to install the correct engine, would you trailer it home and think about it or bail instantly?

The reason I ask is I have 12a and 13b non turbo stuff all over the place at the house. Im looking at an FD chassis car with no engine and a carved up harness. Im thinking possable new race car to fit in SCCA.

Was originally thinking rotary Miata. Too many one off pieces and have to add 500 pounds to make minimum weight.

The FD should be able to make wieght with just the cage added and a minimum wireing harness. Non turbo. Mikuni side drafts means a lot of room to work around.

The question I have is,Does the FD handle like a miata just bigger? Im basing this on the fact that the FD is independent rear suspension similar to the MX5 and the size is just bigger overall.

A street port with a mikuni should be equal to a 1.8 piston miata engine in similar percentages.

Just food for thought.

If you are in for shaking heads,You'd have one of the slowest FD's around.
Why not put a Geo engine in the Fd shell?
The FD would deserve a 3 rotor Engine,not a 1.3litre Non turbo.
...On a serious note,if you can get the FD shell, then consider a Ls1 swap.Rock that Body, don't embarrass the hell out of the Style and manouverabilty that it can possess.
If you can get a Miata shell, put in a 6 port engine and Turbo it.
Putting the FD into the same sentence as a Miata,I dunno it just sounds Wrong!
They are good cars in their own field, but they are like night and day.

I think it would be kinda cool but not particularly practical. Check out this thread for inspiration:

Problem is that in SCCA, the FD races in the regional class of ITE. That is a bid HP, big $ class. If you bridge or peripheral ported the motor w/ a standalone, you might be able to keep up. You'd also need to do better, race quality brakes etc. Racing an FD just isn't cheap. Parts are more expensive than Miata parts and harder to find as well.

You have to do some custom engine mounts to fit an FC 13b in the FD engine bay. Or you'd have to pull it apart and get the FD rear iron and probably other changes as well that I'm not aware of.

I have both a 90 Miata prepped for Spec Miata and an FD. Have also owned more than my share of FCs. The FD does drive similarly to the Miata. However, the rear end isn't as forgiving as the Miatas.

I wouldn't pursue it w/o doing more research and really spending the time to define what your goals are.

The SCCA just allowed the FD in Super Touring U. its an engine based class. The 13b Street port is listed at 2600# You can upgrade all parts and strip everything out of the chassis.

My original thought was a FC former ITS car with a Street ported six port. It can run a stand alone ECU. Then I thought about the FD chassis.

Nobody said it was a great idea and Ive never even sat in an FD. Like I said Just a Thought

I think it is a good thought.

I haven't done any research on it recently but considered it some years ago before deciding to go SM. If you have the budget to run STU, go for it. Building the car is just the first step though.
