Depends on which series you are interested in.
The FAQ's in this section can cover a lot of Ground to give you info on the "what to look for".
Also a BIG TIP is to browse through one of our GURU's site's!..lol! (he is also an active Moderator)
Aaron's Homepage will give you a big leg up on storage, mods, and over all tech Info.

thanks

im saving right now for a third generation rx7 fd. I have a NA generation miata with 135k miles on it (got it with 127k) and that's gonna be my daily, it has a few minor issues but I won't have to spend much money on getting it perfect and fixed but my rx7 will be where I spend alot of my money. it's one of the cars on my bucket list of dream cars I want and is the cheapest. also his name is Aaron too cool lol I'm trying to learn more about simply maintaining the motor for rx7's cause alot of people in America just trash them and I don't wanna be that guy.

A good thing to do is ti check the motor compression, especially the rear housing.

yeah alot of people as I said in America just don't take care of rotaries like they should which is quite annoying the ones in japan are in so much better condition.

Check to see if you fit (in addition to the mechanical items). Sunroofs take away a notable amount of precious headroom. Look for good overall care, and no excuses.

ya ..BUT in Japan they can only drive them until 40,000 Km and after that the Gov't taxes the **** out of the owners which makes getting a new car cheaper in the long run.
This is why the engines and cars are sold in Bulk to Import/export dealers..so they can sell em off no matter if they run or not.
Guaranteed Engine?..Yes it's an Engine..I guarantee it..But Does it RUN?..who the fark knows~!
The Engines are ripped out by 12 year olds getting paid peanuts. They give them a power washer to Drown the engine and "clean it".It sits for God who knows how long until it gets flung into a Crate where it gets eaten by Sea air and water...
I'm glad I got my Mail order Bride..ALIVE..lol!..she was turning blue!

hey speaking of Japanese rx7's I didn't know they made fd rx7's before 1993? international vehicle importers (famous for selling skylines) just got a 1991 fd rx7 and there gonna be selling it soon.

That is probably a 92 model year with a late 91 production date. Domestic market got a jump on exports.

It is never a terrible idea to have a rotary compression tested with a mazda tester that can measure each face of the rotor. If you are unsure about anything have it looked at by someone who you trust and know to be knowledgeable. If you are worried about something, walk away or be willing to accept when things go wrong.

I have bought a JDM engine before, though i know the condition is unknown and there is a risk, the one i bought worked out great for what i needed to do.

This is not a endorsement to trust JDM engines, just an account of my experience, with that out of the way, engine wise compression is probably going to be your biggest item to check.

Puddles and smoke are the first two things I look for. Then rust, then title report, aka carfax. If it passes all those little tests, I'll take it for a spin.

Remember the Seinfeld episode where he got the insane deal on a used Mercedes Benz, only to find that it was so stinky inside that it was unbearable and there was NO WAY to get the smell out? lol, he finally parked it in the ghetto with the keys inside and windows down, but no one could bear to sit in it long enough to steal it!!
That wasn't too far fetched, especially in cars that have been sitting. All it takes is one cat in heat, or one spilled chocolate milk.
