It helps if you State the car that you are working on..not everyone will go to your profile to find it....So,next time,No car stated equals NO post.
..87 N/A.
See the Upper rad hose where it connects to the aluminum Neck at the engine?..see 2 bolts holding the neck onto the water-pump housing..Right there.
Take the aluminum neck off the waterpump housing,by undoing those two bolts,(they are either 10mm or 12mm) and you will see the Thermostat.

The 2Gen FAQ has links to free factory service manuals. The Haynes manual sold at your local generic auto parts store is also pretty good, especially if you have trouble finding some of the parts.

When replacing the thermostat, there are three very important things:
1) Use a Mazda brand thermostat with a "jiggle pin".
2) Use a torque wrench when reinstalling the thermostat cover. See Chapter 30 for the thermostat cover tightening torque.
3) When you are ready to add coolant back into the system, remove the air bleeder plug and add coolant as per Chapter 3.
