Water pump on an 88 RX7

I bought a water pump online that says it will fit my car. I have a 1988 Mazda RX7 convertible non-turbo with manual transmission. When I took out old water pump the end shaft is longer than the new one I purchased. The part that goes on top of shaft is hitting sides of the new water pump. I keep asking about the pump to online seller and they keep saying this is the correct one. Do I need to find a used one out of an old car??? How do I get this to work?

To me it sounds like your talking about the part where the fan bolts onto? If so, there IS a difference between the 86-88 water pump and the 89-91 water pumps

s5 pump won't work on an s4 anyways as the bolt pattern is different...s5 will leak on an s4.(one bolt difference too.)

water pump

Attached is a photo of the water pump that I purchased that said would fit my car. my mechanic said that the top metal shaft is too short and not as long as original that came out of car. Is there one sold new with a longer shaft or do I need an adapter piece to fit this new one?

When I put the attachment on this new pump, it rubs against the lower sides of pump because shaft is too short.

Its probably the wrong water pump. I remember when i bought MasterPro "turbo" axles from oreilly. They didnt fit. I went back to the store and theyre showing the same part number for turbo and NA. Its probably an s5 pump, and they think it fits all 2nd gens.

the shaft part need to have the pulley installed first and then the fan assembly.
Are you trying to put the fan on only?..and that is hitting?

It sounds like you are saying that the flange where the pulley is supposed to bolt to is pressed on to far and jams in the back of the fan clutch. Do you have a picture of the difference you are talking about?
