Vacuum pressure?

Hi, my name is devan and I've had my 1983 rx7 since dec. 25, 2011. One day out of the blue it starts running like crap and no one I know can figure out why. I just did a vacuum pressure test and it fluctuates between 12-17 lbs. at 1000rpms. Does anyone by chance know what the problem might be and what the standard pressure is? Any help would be much appriciated. Thanks.

Take a can of carb cleaner/brake cleaner and spray it around the vac lines and mating surfaces. If the engine bogs, there's your leak.

Vacuum will change with rpm and throttle opening. Vacuum will also change with compression/mileage. 16-20 would be for a very healthy engine, while 12-15 would be "normal" for a more high mileage/weaker compression engine. You may not even HAVE a vacuum leak.

Have you replaced/checked the fuel filter?
Are you getting spark from all plugs?
Have you tried doing the "poor man's compression" test?
I would do a fuel pressure and volume test.
Have you checked your timing? (Probably not the problem if you haven't adjusted the distributor, but worth checking)
Perhaps a video of the engine running would be helpful. These are a few things I would start with.

Two items i'd like to go over.

1. How are you testing spark from the plugs.

2. More importantly, how do you do a poor man's compression test besides spraying carb cleaner all over the place.

Thanks.

ok so im guessing most of you guys who have an rx7 know how to tune the carb. well i dont. the other day i was pulling my car in the garage and my step dad was like smells like its running rich. i dont know exactly what that means or how to fix it. if anyone can give me some guidence on what to do that would be great. thanks.

just found out that the nikki is self adjusting? dont know how accurate that is but hey, pretty cool. concidering my car is 28 years old and has all of the stock stuff on it such as belts, i think my timing belt is going out. if that isnt the right term im talking about the belt on the front of the engine that turns all the gizmos and what not. ive been trying to find one on the internet but i cant find anything. it will randomly make a low pitched squeeling noise and once again....it is completely random.. i have tried to get it to make the noise so i can pop the hood and see if thats the problem but it wont do it until im driving and then when i rev the engine to 3000rpms it goes away and MIGHT come back. if anyone knows of some cheap not extremely difficult things to get my car running faster like just some little things i would GREATLY appreciate it.

Thanks

Devan
