V8 swap in First gen

I have a 1980 rx-7 and since it has a leaking seal in the motor i was thinking about just switching it out with my dad's old 307. Any suggestions because I have looked around the internet and have noticed Granny's Speed Shop is the most notable for doing these types of conversions.

"Old 302" seems to scream "cast iron, carbureted, POS". Forgive me if that is not correct but I have never, ever, seen the point of putting in an antiquated lump of cast iron when there are far better V8s available.

There is an "Other Engine Conversions" subforum here which will probably provide all the information you need.

I thought all v8 heads in south carolina could do all sorts of ghetto to make v8's fit in rwd chassis......

REBAR MOTOR MOUNTS!!!!!

I've seen it.

That motor probably weighs more than the car.

No the motor only actually weighs at most 50 pounds heavier and the reason for not a new V8 is money i have a 307 my dad has so therefore thats the way it goes hahaha. And i dont wanna ghetto rig it why make it ugly when it could be so much better

Well hey, do what you do.

If you are staying carb, there's really nothing to it. All you'll need is the proper trans and driveshaft.

Fab your own mounts. Run a rear sump pan. Cut the hood for air cleaner clearance. Run a bigger fuel pump and you're done.

You may or may not need custom headers. All depends on how it fits. You could just modify the stockers to fit if need be.

It's not rocket science.

If the 307 is the old Chevy engine, that's one of the worst things you could do...it's all of 165 HP, you can't build it up because of the thinwall castings and the heads are emissions horrendous. It is FAR more than 50 lbs heavier with all the stuff on it...bare block to bare block, it's still at least 75 heavier than the 12A.

Well as seeing it was rebuilt by aunt and has a racing cam in it i am more than happy to put it in there as seeing my rotary has leaking seals and its more of a project car for me and my dad. That 12a is not a light one itself btw.

12A block weighs about 165 LBs. I know because that's 20 pounds more then I weigh and I can lift one. The exhaust system, though, weighs in at 17.4 metric tons.
