Turbo repair question (Stock/Efini/BNR...)

Hello guys,

as mentioned in my introduction thread I'm driving a '00 JDM version FD.
Unfortunately I don't get stable boost at 4000rpm onwards and after I had the car checked by two mechanics who checked all hoses I suspect the secondary turbo is gone after +80,000 miles of usage...
Since my car is a '00 model, it has the "Efini turbos" from factory on, correct?
Would the turbos of the older models (92-96) - hypothetically speaking - be a bolt-on fitment for my car as well?
Or else: Are the turbochargers of the '00 model repairable?
We don't have many FDs over here in Germany and I'm looking for an option to buy/repair parts in order to get my car running properly...

I'm glad for every helpful advice about how to proceed, thank you very much! : )

I'm not an FD guy, but awhile ago I recall seeing efini turbos on Rx7.com. Found the link for you

RX7.COM 93-95 Rx7 Turbo

Someone else should be able to answer your questions, I can't contribute much data about FD turbo setups.

Not certain of the changes in management systems from the S6 that we saw here in North America to the S8 that you have, but based solely on lack of "stable boost" at 4k rpm I would first suspect a sticky solenoid, leaking check valve, actuator etc. In my experience turbos going bad usually make it apparent by blowing smoke or leaking oil...but frequently still boost normally. And if kept at stock boost levels and maintained, should go well beyond 80k. My original set is currently at ~128k and going strong. ---> http://www.autosportracetech.com/RX-7/rx7stuff.htm
How familiar with the FD were the two mechanics? And did they make their diagnosis independently?

To answer your other questions, I have never heard of anyone having successfully rebuilt the stock twins and had them last long at all. If you do buy new, I would be sure to use new oil feed and return lines and new exhaust hardware...including gaskets. Changing the turbos in the car is not a job that you want to do...or pay someone to do, a second time.

The Efini rx7s are the early model JDM FDs. Since yours is a 2000 I don't believe it's an Efini model. The earlier model (pre 99 spec) turbos should fit, but they'd be a bit of a downgrade vs keeping your current 99 spec turbos and rebuilding them.
