Turbo problems. Whining and no boost.
Hi guys, I bought my first rx7 about a month ago. I'm new to rotary and turbos so any help y'all have for me will be greatly appreciated.
The other day when I was driving, the very f irst time I got on the car I had 10psi boost just fine threw first 3 gears. After that the problems started.
The car now makes no boost. It also makes a horrible whin at about 4500rpms and gradually gets louder at higher rpms. The whin sounds like a supercharger. Also the car now spits out more smoke than it was before.
I will try and post of video if I can. I was told it might be a leak somewhere. I found a few ripped vac caps which I replaced. Visually checked hoses lines etc and found nothing.
Like I said I'm new to rotary and turbos and could really use some help. Thanks

It could be as simple as a boost leak. If there are any loose vacuum lines on the positive displacement side of the intake system, the system will pop open as soon as boost develops and vent to atmosphere. It can definitely make a loud whooshing sound, but that usually doesn't sound like a supercharger. Here's a great guide for performing a boost leak test http://www.thumper300zx.com/z32/boos...leak_guide.htm
With the smoking though, it could possibly be an oil leak on the turbine seal of your turbo. That would explain the smoke, as well as a lack of boost.

Sounds like a boost leak. check the couplers especially the one on the Y pipe.
The 3rd gen fAQ has many threads which can help you diagnose boost issues. Its a common thing on turbo cars. Especially since most of them are 20 years old at this point.

Did you ever find a solution to your problem? I'm having the same issue, and i took off all the intake piping and checked to see if the turbo's were seized and they were not. Also replaced the TC solenoid, and that did not work either even though the old one had tested bad. I get 0 psi even at WOT at any RPM and gear. Definitely hear a supercharger like sound as well.
