Turbo 12 A powered AE86
Whats up my name is Andy. Im from Ohio. I just bought a AE86 with a Turbo powered 12A. I dont know much about the engines. I dont want a Carbed turbo in my vehicle. I have some special intake man that i am wanting to get rid of and take the engine back to N/A. The intake has a Holly 650 on top of it i am looking to sell the intake and carb and buying a stock intake and carb and running N/A. I was told that this carbed turbo intake system was rare. Not sure just thought id ask some real rotary guys if this was true?
Thanks
Thanks

While rare, a lot of rotor heads feel the way you do...best to EFI in a turbo application...and since I'm doing that, why not step up to a stronger block with a little more displacement, so 13B, here I come.
Pricing? No idea...let's see what some of the old skool 1stgen guru's think.

so i think i am going to run this turbo carb set up for a little while but i am looking for a 12a lover to explane to me how to tune a draw through holly 650 with a t3 turbo. The other thing is that i found that the T3 that is currently on the vehicle is blown which answers my smoking problem.
Once again i am looking for some tuning tips. looking to run 5 to 6 lbs.
I also need to know how to run a bov and waste gate setup on these.
You rotary guys are confusing i get the consept but the tuning is wild.

fuel injected would be nice but im on a budget and just want to get it running for now. im cleaning up the body and just want to drive it around at the same time but still have the power to whip it sideways or hug a corner if im at the track. eventually it will have a turbo 13b or (sorry guys i know you dont want to hear this) i may go back to a pushrod engine eventually. Thanks widz posted on the 1st gen section

if you wanna have the power to whip it sideways you are not going to be happy with going back to N/A lol.
then again you dont have to be going sideways or fast to have fun...youll still have the power to take turns near the limit.

my thought exactly. are these engines good at staying in the power band after turns. i mean i know its all related to the cars handling and corner speed but they stay pretty wound up if your in the right gear right?

i would keep it man. that car is going to be unbelievably slow N/A. stock N/A rotaries are really not powerful lol. especially 12A's
I have to dissagree, if you mod the carb and have a nice exhaust set up the 12a car moves along just fine. Of course if you are used to turbo, yeah its gonna be slower. Your making it sound like the car is gonna be snail slow which its not. I have an 85 GS and mine hauls some butt. I have a modded nikki with mechanical secondaries, header, and high flow muffler and it moves just fine.

yeah it does but its definitely not a powerhouse by any means. i had an 82 GSL and now have an 86 base model. both are roughly the same. and both are about as fast as my 4.6L half ton pickup :P not exactly quick

I guess the biggest thing with our cars is how its driven. Its not so much a low end car and you have to know how to work the pedal. You cant simply mash it to the floor off the line. You have to build a little rpm and then work it to the floor to open the secondaries. Its great in the mid and upper range. I raced what looked like a semi modded civic and just beat him by a little bit. I let him take the lead at first and waited till I brought up some rpm and then laid into it and caught up and just passed him. I think he was surprised when I caught up.

unless your car is tuned or in really really good shape it probably has more power at nearly full throttle than at WOT anyway. i notice this with a lot of vehicles, if you're going WOT and let off just a tiny bit you can actually feel the power pick up.
but yeah rotaries are pretty useless under 4000rpm, especially if they're carbed and you mash the pedal.

Like the input. Carb/turbo setup is the way im going. Im having my buddy up here at school help me tune. He knows all about tuning carbs and sizes and jetting. He races 1/8 mile back in NY and is sponsored. He has resources. Thanks a lot. Still the more input the better. And yes its all about how you drive the car and knowing sweet spots.

You bought the white AE...That thing is fucked... it needs a new motor man. Theres alot alot of problems with that thing. ither sell it or what i would have done (i was looking into buying it) pull the engine, pull the wiring, start over. Straight up 13bt, standalone= done.
