Trying to pass smog in my FD.
Trying to pass smog in my FD.
Hey fellow rx7 lovers. I'm from California in the Los Angeles County area, and my smog is about to be due next month on my FD.. I've done a little bit of research and couldn't really find the answer I was hoping I'd get so I thought I would give this a try. My question is: Do I have to make the car bone stock in order to pass smog? First off, I have no egr valve, I have aftermarket intake manifold; aftermarket radiator; and aftermarket exhaust, with aftermarket gauges (no clue if that'll make a difference). I currently have no a/c as well and have a freakin boost leak somewhere. But thats another story... If anyone has some answers, please leak it out, cus im in desperate need of direction at this point. Thanks

Generally, you have to have all the smog components in place. Whether they do anything isn't important. That means two cats, egr valve, acv, solenoids, air pump, charcoal canister, CEL that illuminates and turns off, doesn't throw codes during the test. Then pass the sniffer test.
If you want to be sure, put it back to stock. Some tech's are lenient on the visual stuff and will let a downpipe or a few capped off hoses slide. Some won't. It's their job on the line if they get in trouble for passing something that shouldn't pass. Or you just need to know a guy.

i heard of some rx7 owners in CA passing emissions without the stock downpipe and the one cat in the midpipe w/ the airpump hooked up
There are many underhood modifications you can do that won't affect emissions (intercoolers, intake, piping) but they will probably not pass the visual inspection. I've heard that you can get away with an intercooler and some pipes, but I've never experienced that first hand.
