I just bought a 1988 Mazda rx7 Convertible and I cant seem to isolate the starting issue, I replaced the fuel pump and it wont start still, however when I spray fuel through the carbonator it will start and stay running, Any and all ideas will help.
Can you confirm that you have fuel pressure to the fuel rail? Does the fuel pump run when cranking the engine? Jump the yellow test connector on the right strut tower snd turn the key to the on position. The fuel pump should run continuously. Does it?
If so I would recommend removing and testing the fuel injectors or simply removing the connectors to the secondary injectors and testing them in place. Should give you a rough idea because if theyre clogged then the primary injectors will likely be clogged as well.
You can apply a gound to one pin of the injector and then tap a 12V supplied lead to the other pin and see if the injector clicks. You can do this rapidly to simulate injector pulse if youd like. Depending on how long the car has sat, it's likely that the injectors are stuck with old gas. It's common when these cars sit. This is where I would start given the fuel pump is new snd you know you have spark and you know you have compression.
If i use break clean the car will start and run while the break clean is in use, after that it dies out. Which im assuming means it gets compression and spark. I've replaced the fuel pump and now it sends gas appropriately. however she still wont start without break clean, I'm about to check the fuel filter next and then the injectors. if i have bad injectors could it create a starting issue like she has and where can i get new ones without paying an arm and a leg.
So i think you're right on that i even replaced the fuel pump and it now sends fuel to the engine however still wont start on its own, how many fuel injectors does it have ( heard something about hidden ones?) and where can i get new ones without breaking an arm and a leg, or how to clean them?
There are primary and secondary injectors for each rotor, so theres four injectors total. As far as cleaning goes, there are lots of shops that can test and clean injectors so there’s could be a local shop that could test them, just look for shops that look for fuel systems. As far as replacing them goes, you’d probably have some luck by posting a WTB here for OEM injectors and get them for a fair price.
