Trouble shooting my 84 GSL SE

I got my GSL SE in Sept 2018 with 131,000 miles. It was very reliable with the exception of some vacuum leaks which I thought I had fixed when locating and replacing a couple hoses and brittle plastic connectors. I was following this forum which helped a lot until I started opening cans of worms, nothing too major and then, I had to call a tow truck. My issue is that the cat section before the firewall just glowed red hot right behind the o2 sensor. I'm afraid a bunch of vacuum lines and OMP lines are toast. There aren't any rotary shops near me in western NC. At first I figured it was cat failure and I'm leaning toward replacing full exhaust and deleting air pump via racing beat setup. I'm curious if it's just the o2 sensor though. Still, my interest is going with full mods and getting more power without the expense if porting and going turbo which I'd like to do when I have the funds. I'm hoping to link up with SE owners who have some success with them. I'm open to discussing arrangements toward consulting if it comes to that. I'm here, I'm new and I'm thrilled to see all the folks here helping each other out. This is a good place to be.

Exhaust glowing red:

the exhaust can glow red because the timing is too retarded, running very lean or the cat being plugged/clogged

in your case since it’s running well I’d bet that it’s more related to the ignition or you developed a vacuum leak, check that your timing is set to where stock wants it and go from there with the other items

Ok. I haven't considered timing as an issue. If running lean is the problem then could it be that injectors are clogged? Do you know of any archives to refer to for timing? Thanks for the info.

I did find a vacuum leak on the fuel pressure regulator. I think that was the part. It's below the intake toward the front being the water pump. It has a bell looking end that's clear plastic. As I recall this is what I was looking at before the issues grew.

That would be the fuel pulsation dampener, there’s also one of those connected to the fuel pump at the back of the car- highly recommend replacing the one in the engine bay as they’re known for causing engine fires when they fail (can get a block off kit or replacement part from Atkins rotary I believe)

Alright. I was trying to identify the part and recall that I had questions about it. Now I know what to research. Thanks a lot!
