Torque specifications and differences on FSM's

Hello everybody.

I have a 1987 Mazda RX-7 FC S4 N/A Sport.
Today I was rebuilding the Clutch Master Cylinder (because it's rubbers were old and were leaking), and when I was mounting it to the car, I wondered to myself:
-"Hum... What is the factory torque spec for the clutch pipe?"
"I know! Let's look on the FSM!"
So I went to my 86 88 FSM folder where I have all of these files:

and I searched for the clutch section, but I couldn't find anything about torque specs in that section. There is also a section about torque specs on the file "1987 RX7 TECHNICAL DATA" called "STANDARD BOLT AND NUT TIGHTENING TORQUE", but somehow I don't feel safe relying on those values, maybe because a few weeks ago I tried to use those torque specs on the nuts of the fuse box and almost ended up breaking the fuse box, because those nuts are 10mm and that section says that it's torque is between 20 and 28 N/M... maybe too much for a small plastic case?...

But, I remember that a few months ago when I was searching information about my car, I had read on the 89 91 FSM the torque spec for that nut (on the clutch pipe, that's what we are talking about). So I went to my 89 91 FSM folder, where I have all of these files:

And there is, on page 8 of section H, the information I needed:

But... this is for the 1989 to 1991 RX-7 and mine is from 1987...

Does this mean that the FSM for the S4 is not as detailed as the FSM for the S5? Or am I missing something?

What should I do? Do I torque it like I want it, or with the torque specs shown on the "STANDARD BOLT AND NUT TIGHTENING TORQUE" section from the 86 88 FSM? Or do I use the specs from the S5?

Hi Eduardo,

I think that I would use the S5 values. Some FSMs are more detailed than others (like you found for S5 vs. S4). The Standard Bolt and Nut Tightening Torque is really just general and may not always be correct (such as when plastic is involved).

In general, the FSMs will specify the torque for the nuts/bolts where it is important. Others, such as this clutch pipe, are less important and you can often tighten by feel, use a similar FSM for another year, or use the standard bolt/nut torque.

In this case, the S5 values would be fine. If you didn't have the S5 values available, I would just do it by feel if a torque spec wasn't given.
