WA Teach me please!

So, I'm moving into the tuning scene. It seems more exciting to work with than my usual throw a small block in it and call it good mentality lol. So i plan on buying a 89-91 S5 13BT rx7. i want to get to somewhere around 350-400hp. I want to achieve this at a reasonable price. Ill have about 3-4.5k to work with before buying the car. I figure i can get one that runs for about 1500 in my area. So i have about 1.5-3k to spend on building it. any tips on products, trusted brands, needed items, learning how to get a reliable powerful car would be much appreciated. I figured if i got a better intake system/exhaust system, intercooler, oil cooler, better turbo, BOV, wastegate and a few other odds i would be around 350hp. is any of this plausible? please help. thanks

Your best bet will be to browse the 2nd gen tech and single turbo sections. Read what others have used, and make decisions based on that. The list should include a lot more:

1) Aftermarket computer
2) Better fuel pump
3) Larger fuel injectors
4) Wideband 02 sensor/controller/gauge

etc...

Read through this website first. Some of the information is a bit dated, but it is still good stuff. Read these two links first, and then go to the Site Map and read through the rest of the site when you have the time. (S4 = Zenki, S5 = Kouki)

The Rtek ECU upgrade was not available when that website was put together, so check it out here as an option:

The BNR turbo upgrade is another low-budget option that you may want to consider, especially if you need to rebuild the turbo anyway. Just keep in mind that you need to upgrade the fuel delivery system prior to upgrading the turbo.

It is not likely that you will be able to make it to 350-400hp with only $3-4.5K, but you can always spend more time and money on the car later to move up to higher power levels. Also, you may want to consider the S4 RX-7 if you have trouble finding an S5. Personally, I like the S4 better, but I would probably just get whichever series is available as long as it doesn't have the dreaded automatic transmission.

Fabbing your own stuff can help you save money as well. I'm thinking of doing this for some of my own ideas.

Yea good luck with that. Ditto on the "you can't get it done with 4.5k". I'm about 6k into my S5 by now and I've barely cracked 200 whp. Remember this:

"In a car you can have reliable, fast, or inexpensive. Pick two"
