taking engine out

I'm new to rotary engines and the only think I have worked on is my motorcycle. Just found out my 82 rx7 I got as a project is running on one rotor, would it be unwise to try and pull the engine out? Local "mazda man" is willing to look and see what exactly is salvageable from the engine and help me rebuild it other than that I'm on my own lol

Well it has to be remove to be rebuilt or replaced regardless. So no...that would not be "unwise".

I'm not as familiar with the FB (1st Gen.) RX7s as some on the forum...maybe one of those guys will chime in. But you might want to check the FAQ sticky at the top of this NEW MEMBER TECH page. There might be a thread or two...maybe even a tutorial video that could help give you an idea of what's to be done.
Whether you want to remove it or not kind of ends up being a question only you can answer. Do you have the space, tools and any DIY mechanic experience? If so, it's not likely any different or complicated than other 4 cyl. piston engines of it's day. I doubt any power tools will be needed, but you'd also need to rent or buy an engine hoist and have a way to transport the engine (via pickup?) to the shop once it's out.

Alright I will look around the forums for some more info I can get ahold of an engine hoist so I think I will try it myself I guess nothing too bad can go wrong since It needs to be rebuilt anyway

Removing the engine in an 82 is not difficult honestly. I would leave the trans in the car and be sure to disconnect the oil cooler lines from the engine, not from the oil cooler as the oil coolers are prone to cracking when reinstalling the lines. pull the oil cooler and radiator of course and make sure the hood is removed. Other than that it's pretty basic as far as removing the engine is concerned. If you have questions feel free to shoot me a pm.

Get yourself a workshop manual and give it a go... only way to learn. It's not too bad of a job if you follow the manual and don't cut corners. I rebuilt my first 12a rx7 engine when I was in year 12 and had little mechanical knowledge... Turned out to be a very strong engine. Goodluck
